Folk culture is the focus of a theatre workshop for children

Yashwinder Sharma’s aim is to instil confidence and self-reliance among children. To that end,Sharma, the programme officer at Kalagram has swung into action for the 25-day theatre workshop starting June 5 at Kalagram,Manimajra.

According to Sharma, children learn more through practical education and the idea is not to load them with assignments but instead provide a platform where they can think beyond the usual. “For Rs 50,one can participate in the workshop which will be conducted by Gagan Mishra,National Award-winning actor from the National School of Drama,” adds Sharma. Mishra also works as the creative director at CURIO — an educational theatre institute.

The focus of the workshop will be on folk theatre, which is perceived to be a dying art. “Children will not only help in promoting folk culture but also learn about folkore,” says Mishra, who feels that theatre helps in laying the foundation for those who want to succeed in the field of art and cinema. “It’s like nourishing the root so that the plant can grow to be strong and healthy,” he says.

Mishra, who has organised more than 100 training camps for children across the country, will include theoretical assignment like writing a script, poems and dialogues. Children will also learn basic skills of acting including body movements, expressions, speech, personality development, fun activities and better communication skills.

The workshop will run in two sessions, each consisting of 40 students between the age-group of 8 to 16 years. “The last two days of the workshop will have a theatre festival where children will eb able to perform and showcase their talent,” adds Mishra. Certificates by North Zone Culture Centre (NZCC) will also be issued to the participants. All those interested can contact Kalagram before June 5 for registration.
