To lessen the burden on the city’s tertiary care institute, the state needs many other PGIMER-level institutes, admitted Santosh Chowdhary, the minister of state for Health and Family Welfare at a press meet on Saturday.

Talking about the excessive pressure on city’s tertiary hospital,Chowdhary said,“I am aware of the fact that the only tertiary care institute in the city is overburdened and is treating patients three to four times more than its capacity. To reduce the burden,I had earlier sent a proposal for the construction of a tertiary care hospital in Hoshiarpur, which will match PGIMER’s standards.”

“I have chosen Hoshiarpur, because it is a gateway for Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal, hence people coming from these two states can be treated at Hoshiarpur,” she said.

The minister said that the infrastructure and staff in the health sector should be strengthened. “There is a shortage of about 700 doctors in Punjab. The Punjab state government has not recruited people, either in heath or in other sectors,” she said.

While talking about the display of the Punjab chief minister’s picture on ambulances, she said,“The government of India has decided to adopt a universal nomenclature, namely ‘National Mobile Medical Unit’ with a common colour scheme to be displayed on all MMU’s (both existing and new) in English,Hindi and the regional language.”

She said that the letters for the removal of pictures were sent to all states in February, those states who want 20% of funds under NHRM should have to follow the guidelines.

Talking about the increasing number of cancer and kidney problems in the state, she said,“The central government has granted an amount of one lakh crore to the Punjab government for the medication and treatment of cancer patients.”
