People from several countries including Australia and Canada are coming forward to donate, but still the amount is very less as the number of poor patients is very high, the Medical Superintendent at PGIMER said.
The resident doctors had launched a signature campaign to boycott the convocation. Jagat Ram, director, PGIMER also issued letter to the Association of Resident Doctors in which he regretted the inconvenience caused to the recipients of degrees and their families.
PGIMER director Dr Jagat Ram, an eminent ophthalmologist, says though the institute is doing its best to cope up with the rush, he would request neighbouring states and medical colleges “to strengthen their patient care services”.
The circular states, “After you have received the degree, you will kindly bow to the chief guest and director before returning to your seat.” Sources said such directions were given even during the convocation in 2015 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief guest.

The officials of Sector 11 police station told Chandigarh Newsline that Anil Paswan, who was lodged in Ludhiana prison in connection with a theft case, came to PGI for his treatment around 8.30 pm on Friday.
“We recovered a .32 bore pistol, which was used in the crime, and two live cartridges. The pistol was recovered from Rishab. We are yet to find out from where the accused procured the weapon as the pistol is not licensed,” SP Jagjeet Singh Jalla said.

Chandigarh, Jan 24 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi met ailing Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Sunday at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh. Badal has been hospitalised since Friday due to chest congestion and common cold. PM Modi was in Chandigarh to receive French President Francois Hollande, who is on a three day visit to India.
