With Union Minister for Railways Pawan Bansal in the dock owing to the recent controversy involving his nephew,the stakes for becoming the contender for the ticket from the BJP have gone higher. The party leaders believe that the chances of the BJP garnering a victory in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections have become higher than before. The race for the ticket in the run-up to the elections is heating up.
The two BJP leaders,Satya Pal Jain and Harmohan Dhawan,held separate conferences on Sunday to make revelations about Bansal. Dhawan,Jain and Bansal have been traditional rivals,with the three having faced each other in several elections. This time,however,Dhawan has joined the BJP.
Dhawan on Sunday stated that he was a contender for the ticket in the BJP. It is our Parliamentary Board that decides who would be given the ticket. I am a contender for the election ticket based on my past performance in the city. It was with my support that Bansal won the elections in 1999 and it would be because of me that he will lose the next election, says Dhawan.
Jain,meanwhile stated that the decision about who to give the ticket to is up to the party high command. The announcement will come two to three months before the election. He added that whoever holds the lotus in his hand this time will win the election.
The BJP has not been in power for the past 15 years. Even in the Municipal Corporation,the party has not been able to get its Mayor elected in over a decade. A BJP leader says that the stakes are high and winning the election this time is of paramount importance to give a boost to the party here. Also with Bansal facing a crisis,the chances of the BJP sweeping the polls is high.
