With a number of parents seeking admission forms in prominent government schools being turned away due to the concept of neighbourhood schools being taken up from this year, the schools have found few takers against over 2,000 nursery seats.

While only 15 forms could be procured on Friday – the first day for distribution of forms, due to delay in availability – a total of 280 forms were collected across all the 107 government schools on Saturday. There were no takers for the forms on Monday.

“There were instructions from the UT Education Department this time that the forms be provided in accordance with the neighbourhood areas defined in the list which has been attached with the forms. The parents were highly upset with the removal of Sector 25 from our school’s neighbourhood list this year,” said a coordinator from the junior wing of Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS) Sector 16.

The concept of neighbourhood schools mandates the state government to ensure that every child (aged between six to fourteen years) finds his school at walking distance from his or her residence. For different age groups the distance varies. For nursery class, the school should be situated within a radius of 1 km.

“We are now trying to bring the concept into force for the convenience of nursery class students. However, for meeting the needs of students across all parts of the city we need to set up more schools. Our department is working on it,” said UT Education Secretary V K Singh.

Of the 295 forms taken by the applicants so far, about 230 forms were collected at the top five schools GMSSS in Sector 10,16,35,37 and Manimajra.

The last date for submission of forms is January 7. The draw of lots will be conducted in all the schools on January 12 in the presence of School Management Committees and parents of the applicants.
