Singer Bazil Jude Rozario returns to hometown Chandigarh with a repertoire of nostalgic Western hits
Every evening,Clarence Rozario would sit on his piano and play for an hour. The Rozario household would resound with music as Clarences fingers tap danced on the black-and-white keys. He would call out to his grandchildren, especially young Bazil Jude Rozario,to sit with him and play. My grandfather was a musician,a pianist, and I probably get my genes from him, says Bazil,39. Apart from being a musician,Clarence was a cartoonist with the city edition of The Indian Express.
Singing professionally since 1994,Bazils also been teaching music for 22 years. At St Johns in Chandigarh and then Mount St Marys and Convent of Jesus and Mary in Delhi, says Bazil. He adds that he moved to Delhi to pursue a technical course but gave it up,much to the dismay of his family, for music. I used to sing at the church, and an old band heard me. They approached me to sing with them at a gig at the American Centre. That was my first appearance in Delhi. I got Rs 2,500 for one gig and I decided this was the career to be in, he says.
After teaching and performing in various cities,Bazil says that he is back in Chandigarh for good. Marriage and the birth of my daughter brings me back, he says.
For now,he will not teach and instead, concentrate on performances. Afficianados of old Western hits can hear him perform at Pewter Room in Sector 26 on Wednesdays and Thursdays; Ten Towns,Sector 26,on Fridays; and Chandigarh Gold Club on weekends.
