With the Akhtars on the couch sipping on their steaming cups of coffee and indulging in sibling revelries,Karan Johar had brewed enough curiosity about Zoya Akhtars upcoming film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara on Koffee with Karans last season. It was the perfect leather padded cushioned platform for the brother-sister,Farhan and Zoya,to talk about their film, how father Javed Akhtar stepped in and tweaked it from Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara to Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. And,how Zoya still tells Farhan what to do. What also came to fore was that Farhan makes for a great director and actor while she in turn has been into movies for ages. But this was a film she had to make. All of this brings us to a rather troubling point of contention what made two female writers Zoya and Reema Katgi, pen an out and out guy flick? That too with the proverbial road trip, the one that is more of a last song of bachelorhood? For that youll have to get in touch with Zoya and Reema, shoots Farhan Akhtar, who was in the city on Saturday for the films promotion .
Farhan swooped in along with Katrina Kaif,Abhay Deol,Kalki Koechlin and films producer,Ritesh Sidwani. As they made their way through a bursting at seams PVR Centra Mall, the hoots, whistles, screams went all out for Kaif, who looked nice in a simple peach frilly top with blue jeans. With Hrithik Roshan absent from the picture,it was Deol, sporting his gelled back John Travolta look from Grease, who was the show stealer and stopper. Kaif on the other hand, reveled in the generosity and love of her audience for catapulting her to the sexiest star status.
Back to Farhan, the actor does agree that the film has a Dil Chahta Hai (DCH) deja vu feel to it. The boys went on a road trip in that one too. And its great that one is reminded of DCH when they see Zindagi..,but Ill assure you that this one is different. An out and out entertainer, its about re-evaluating life, friendship, celebrating the moment, siezing every bit of it and living today, said Farhan.
The films trailor flashes across Spain and Egypt, with all three having the time of their lives, making every moment count. Be it running with the bulls (which was interestingly the original title of the film),dancing with Flamenco dancers, singing Senorita, squishing tomatoes in a Spanish festival, scuba diving, sky diving or driving through picturesque landscape, its road trip made in fantasy land. Weve had disproportionate amount of fun on the sets, and its all guilty pleasure, dimpled Kaif, who plays the scuba diving instructor in the film. The only one who didnt get to have any fun,was the new bride Mrs Kashyap. Im the only one sitting in six inch heels in 45 degrees wearing a tight jeans. They had fun at my expense, laughed Koechlin.
Pan to Deol, and he says theyve got enough tomato soup for soul that will last them a long time. How to slice, dice, squish, squash a tomato in hundred ways, ask me and Ill tell you, laughed Deol, who recalled the recreation of tomato festival in Spain, which left them sun-dried,sun-burnt and smelling of tomatoes for a month.
All fun apart, the stars aver that the film is a story from the heart with its many layers, depth and an undercurrent of lifes philosophy. Everything in a non-preachy manner, says Akhtar, assuring that masses will relate to it.
At some point in life, theyve all packed their bags and gone on road trips. Kaif through north India. Koechlin through the roads of Madhya Pradesh,Farhan and Deol on countless ones. The trailer of the film looks and sounds promising and leaves you with points to ponder, especially when Roshan rues in the film that all his life,he has lived in a box. You live in a box only when you die, whispers Kaifs character. So get out of the box on July 15 when the film comes to a theatre near you.
