Artists from India, the United Kingdom,Canada,Sweden,Finland and Hong Kong have come together in the first International Drawings and Graphic Prints Exhibition,2011. An initiative by the Society for Development of Films and Arts,a foundation set up in 1999 for the promotion of art,the exhibition features 185 works and is being held at two galleries — the Art Gallery of Government College of Art and Exhibition Hall of Government Museum and Art Gallery.

Suresh Pushpakar,General Secretary of the organisation, says,“We don’t have a jury which selects works of artists,we believe an artist is the best judge of his/her own work and budding artists need a platform, along with senior people, which we strive to provide.” Among the artists are senior names like Seema Murtaza as well as several students of the College of Art.

Murtaza’s drawing of a tree evokes several sentiments. With not a single leaf on it,and the branches spread out wide, the tree is a symbol of desolation. Savleen Kaur’s etching of an old man making tea in the candlelight evokes warmth, while viewers can feel the winter chill in Naveen Ganjoo’s drawing of a row of trees. Mandeep Singh,on the other hand, presents the destruction of Hiroshima with an explosion of colours.

Women seem to be a favourite subject with artists; in some canvases, they appear lonely, others explore the mother-child bond, while several depict them in their beauty and splendour. An endearing one is of Radha standing near a kitchnar tree.

A view of the old Shimla by Anubhuti Sinha evokes nostalgia with its expanse of wooden roofs and old construction. A touching work is of Anita Gupta, whose work shows a young girl talking to a fish in a fields.

The exhibition is on at Gallery I (Art Gallery of Government College of Art,Chandigarh) and Gallery II (Exhibition Hall of Government Museum and Art Gallery) till March 7.
