On PU corridors, students walk with fear in mind

Tejas Anand,a first year student of UICET and resident of hostel number 3,submitted a written complaint to university authorities following which the police lodged a case of wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation against unknown students,as he failed to recognise those involved in ragging.

August 3,2010: Tejas Anand,a first year student of UICET and resident of hostel number 3,submitted a written complaint to university authorities following which the police lodged a case of wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation against unknown students,as he failed to recognise those involved in ragging. A day after filing the complaint,he left for his hometown Delhi with his parents.

September 14,2011: Saksham Bhatnagar filed a complaint of harassment to hostel number 1 warden. Sahil Gupta, second year student of his department and hostel resident, was found guilty. Sahil was expelled from the hostel for four years, imposed a penalty of Rs 25,000,his scholarship, fellowship and other benefits withheld or withdrawn. He was barred from appearing in one house test and also could not represent the institution in any event. But there was no legal action.

The common thread running between the two students, who are victims of ragging and from the same chemical engineering department,is that they are yet to return to the campus—Tejas,a year after he left.

Students of this department are living in constant fear,so much so that they are even afraid to complain.

“The ragging incidents are very common. We have all been subjected to it. But we do not want to complain and get ragged further. So,we have decided to remain silent,” say chemical engineering department students on condition of anonymity.

The authorities on their part show helplessness.

“I agree that there is a fear factor among the students about ragging incidents. Despite our assuring the complainants that they do not need to fear, still if the students continue to be under some kind of trauma or fear, the authorities cannot make them get rid of it,” says Dean Students Welfare A S Ahluwalia.

They also try to take shield under the pretext that first year students are irregular in attending classes.

“Saksham did not attend his classes after he filed the ragging complaint. Nothing can be concluded as students are normally irregular in the initial days,” said a senior teacher of the department, who teaches first year students.

Saksham’s room-mate and classmate Adarsh Bakshi is tight-lipped and says he has no clue. “Saksham has neither vacated the room nor did he return from the day he went with his parents to his hometown Faridabad last week,” is all that hostel warden Jitender Grover has to say.

For now, with heads bowed and fear in their minds, first year chemical engineering students walk the corridors of their department.
