On a write note

Grapho-analyst Shilpa Aggarwal is helping enthusiasts unravel personality traits by studying handwritings.

Grapho-analyst Shilpa Aggarwal is helping enthusiasts unravel personality traits by studying handwritings.

The notes are scribbled at a furious pace, sentences run into each other and punctuations are often missed. Normally, that’s how most scribes take notes during interviews. It was no different for us until we realised Shilpa Aggarwal’s curious glances as she sat across the table. After all, reading between the lines is her expertise.

Chandigarh-based Aggarwal is a grapho-analyst who specialises in graphology or the study of the “graphical movements” of a person — be it their handwriting, signatures, doodles, sketching or painting.

She reads all this to reveal personality traits of individuals. For instance,if you strike your “t” with a lower bar, chances are that you suffer from low self-esteem. And those who write with a rightwards slant are more expressive in nature.

“In India, graphology is still at a nascent stage but globally, especially in Europe,it is being used for various purposes including crime investigation, career selection, employee screening and gauging partner compatibility,” says Aggarwal.

Having spent some student years in Switzerland, the 33-year-old admits she’s always been “passionate” about writing. “It started as a hobby before I undertook a short course on the subject and realised that I wanted to pursue it seriously,” says Aggarwal, who has been conducting workshops for corporates and school students at the British School for over a year.

The strokes, the slants, the dotting of the “i,” and the curvature of the “y” are just a few things that Aggarwal looks out for in her analysis. After years of research, she is now getting ready to launch a book on the subject. “Did you know that around 90 per cent of our brain cells are activated when we write,” says Aggarwal, who writes prolifically and posts tips on her website http://www.writingspeaks.com.

She stresses that graphology does not venture into the past and nor does it foretell the future. “The only thing that it unravels is the personality of the writer and his/her attitude towards life,” asserts Aggarwal, who also notes out how graphology can help people overcome negative traits. “Writing can help overcome the negativity by working on it consciously. It’s a proven study that those who write their goals are more likely to achieve them than those who don’t,” says Aggarwal.
