Amidst allegations of the police and the administration harassing the nursing students holding a sit-in at Gagan Chowk here, several politicians, including Patiala MP Preneet Kaur and the Akali Dal’s Lok Sabha candidate from Patiala,Prem Singh Chandumajra, visited the agitators.

The students have been holding a dharna here since Tuesday, demanding notification for their colleges in Patiala and Faridkot by the state government, besides a stipend.

Chandumajra even announced a stipend of Rs 4,000 per month for the students, but they refused to budge, demanding an official letter before lifting the dharna. Preneet, too, tried to get political mileage from the situation. “We will not let the Akali government pressurise the students,” she said, promising “all possible help” to the students.

Patiala DC Vikas Garg, too, assured the students that the government would consider their demands. “I asked the agitators to hold dialogue on the matter, but they just refused to listen,” he said. Meanwhile, traffic on the national highway had to be diverted through villages nearby for the second consecutive day.
