Nursing students face hostel confinement for missing PM Modi's Mann Ki Baat. (File Photo) As many as 36 nursing students of the National Institute of Nursing Education, PGIMER, Chandigarh have been barred from stepping out of the hostel for a week after they failed to attend a programme held to air Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 100th episode of Mann Ki Baat on April 30.
The letter was issued on May 3 by Dr Sukhpal Kaur, the principal of the institute. As many as 28 students from the first year and eight from the third year are on the list of those who would not be allowed to step out of the hostel.
The letter says that as per the instruction of the director, PGI, the message was conveyed to the students and the hostel coordinator that it is compulsory for the first and third year students to attend the special programme on the 100th episode of Mann Ki Baat. As per the letter, a warning was issued that the “outing of those students who do not attend the lecture would be cancelled” and despite a reminder during the night and morning rounds of the hostel, 36 students didn’t attend the programme.
According to Dr Kaur, the action has been taken to maintain discipline as students are required to attend many guest lectures which are organised in the department on a regular basis and said it is a disciplinary action and has not been taken because they did not attend the particular programme.
Dr Kaur added, “Everyone in the Institute works as a team, with all sincerity and it is unfortunate that this action is being misunderstood and misinterpreted.”
Meanwhile, Manoj Lubana, state president of Chandigarh Youth Congress, in a statement, described the issue as a “dictatorial decision”. He said the intention of the PGI is to punish and harass the 36 girl students and claimed that the action has been taken against the students under pressure from the administration.
He further said that if this decision impacts the academic life of the students in the future, the Youth Congress will not sit silent and will protest on a large scale.
