So you have a space constraint. You have a narrow entry gate to your residence and still want to have a welcome tree at the entrance. While Bottle Brush and Weeping Willow are too big,I’d suggest you go in for a fish tail palm. See the accompanying picture and you’ll find the tree perfect and welcoming for the location. It has a clean habit so far as shedding leaves is concerned, goes up straight and needs no extra space to grow. It’s also a very good indoor shade loving plant and can be kept inside for quite long without any ill effect. The leaves are like fish fins or tail and hence the name of the plant.

* Q: I have grown cauliflower in my garden. Some of the leaves have been eaten by some insect. The curd is of good size and I think it will take another 15 days before it’s ready for plucking. What should I do to keep the insect under control?

Paramajit,Chandigarh

If you plan to pluck the curd in next 15 days and also there is nothing wrong with the curd, then in my opinion do not spray anything. Try to locate and physically remove the insect if it is a caterpillar. Do not leave the stub at the time when you harvest as that is the potential source of insect breeding and further infestation.

* Q: How long will radish take to be ready if I plant it today? How frequently should it be watered?

Surinder,Chandigarh

Radish will be ready in 45 to 60 days for extracting. Normally the radish is planted in between beds on ridges. Whatever water they get from the kitchen garden is sufficient for their needs.
