Despite promises made by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, Panjab University (PU) is yet to receive clearance for the funds for establishment of a world-class gymnasium and two shuttle buses for the university.
At the swearing-in ceremony of Panjab University’s Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) in September last year, Sukhbir had assured the students that the state government would sanction Rs 3 crore for several developmental projects at the varsity.
Nearly six months later, not much action has been initiated to fulfill the promises made by the SOI-led PUCSC. In December last year, work was, however, initiated for the installation of solar water heaters at the university hostels. Work on installation of solar water heaters at hostels 1, 2, 3 and 4 was handed out to four private firms. Till date, the installation work has not been completed for all of the university hostels.

In December, party leaders of SOI, the student wing of SAD had said the state had sanctioned funds for four of the promised projects and work would be initiated soon. Two months later, work is yet to begin.
Students of the university are rather miffed with the council members. “It is the same old story every year, promises are made but not fulfilled. This year, the council members have hardly been visible on the campus, let alone initiation of any concrete work for the welfare of students. It is easy to organise multiple cultural events and trips, but the test of a council’s capability is only getting real work done,” a student of Panjab University said.
According to Jasmeen Kang, president of PUCSC, “In the next few days, we are likely to announce the approval of the project for playing of two shuttle buses. Owing to administrative hurdles, these projects have been delayed.”
