New Chandigarh DGP Surendra Yadav’s utmost priority: Peaceful and impartial conduct of Lok Sabha elections 2024
Chandigarh DGP Surendra Singh Yadav told the police personnel to cultivate a sense of gratitude for serving the people.

New Chandigarh Director General of Police Surendra Singh Yadav on Monday said his foremost priority would be ensuring the peaceful and impartial conduct of Lok Sabha elections 2024 in the Union Territory. He also emphasised the need for punctuality and empathy towards distressed individuals.
Yadav is a 1997-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre. He assumed charge as the Chandigarh police chief hours before the Code of Conduct was imposed on Saturday and was given a welcome parade in Sector 26 on Monday. Yadav’s predecessor, Praveer Ranjan, was given a farewell on Friday.
During his address, Yadav said, “I expect police personnel at the station level to interact with the general public beyond the specified meeting times. Seva bhaav (a sense of gratitude for serving the people) is another component that should reflect in your behavior while dealing with the general public. I would like to say that Chandigarh is a small place, and nothing can be hidden here. Moreover, I have the habit of interacting with everyone, irrespective of their rank, status, or class. Hence, I cultivate a strong ground intelligence network at every place.”
“If I am expecting so much from my subordinates, then it is natural that they will also have expectations from me. I assure you that I will leave no stone unturned for their welfare,” he said.
In his speech, Yadav mentioned the efficiency of the UT traffic police, recalling, “During my college days when I used to come to Chandigarh, there was an impression of strict traffic police and compliance with traffic rules. I am glad the UT traffic police are still maintaining that impression.”
Deputy Inspector General (UT) R K Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police (UT) Kanwardeep Kaur, Superintendent of Police (Cyber) Ketan Bansal, and other officers, including all station house officers and deputy superintendents of police, were present at the welcome ceremony.
Previously, Surendra Singh Yadav was transferred as DGP to Andaman & Nicobar Islands from Delhi on February 9. Later, in a March 12 order, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) stated, “In modification of MHA’s order of the same number dated February 9, Surendra Singh Yadav is hereby transferred from Delhi and posted as DGP, Chandigarh. Additionally, the transfer/posting of Madhup Kumar Tiwari is hereby canceled with immediate effect and until further orders.”
