Music on the move

Regular live performers at Orchid Lounge in Sector 34,the two had caught the attention of New Zealand-based restaurateurs and owners of a chain called Little India. “They heard us at the Orchid Lounge and sponsored our trip to NZ,” they say. “It’s fun being travelling musicians — the exposure,experience,the excitement of meeting new people,especially fellow musicians was simply amazing,” says Sukhmani while Hari talks about the “diversity and personal growth” this trip has provided them with. “We had gigs lined up with Bhangra Boys are Back,an Auckland- based band,who specialise in Punjabi pop. They are attached to their roots,but curiously,have little knowledge about the evolution of Indian music,” they say. Also,Indian music is somewhat stereotyped abroad,with not much being known apart from Bollywood and bhangra. “So,when we sang our stylised electro versions of original Punjabi songs and Sufi music,they were mesmerised,” says Hari.

Hari and Sukhmani also got to meet Rhian Sheehan,a Gold award winner (equivalent to a National Award in NZ) known for his unusual audio visual backgrounds accompanying live music. Apart from their professional gigs,they also performed at the sangeet of an NRI family based in Sydney. Next on their list are gigs lined up in the US and UK.
