Power cuts at water treatment plants hit Mohali’s water supply

The water supply in these areas is managed by the Public Health Department, which treats water at its sectors 56 and 57 plants, and distributes it to homes via the Kajauli source. However, officials confirm that ongoing electricity disruptions are impacting plant operations.

Residents are grappling with a severe water supply crisis as frequent power cuts at water treatment plants in sectors 56 and 57 have reduced water pressure across several sectors and phases. The problem has persisted for the past four days, leaving many households with little to no water, especially on upper floors.

The water supply in these areas is managed by the Public Health Department, which treats water at its sectors 56 and 57 plants, and distributes it to homes via the Kajauli source. However, officials confirm that ongoing electricity disruptions are impacting plant operations.

“The Public Health Department has been maintaining full supply levels, but due to extended power cuts, the distribution is severely affected,” explained Michael, Executive Engineer at the Mohali Public Health Department.

“For the past three to four days, there have been major power outages in the area due to maintenance work by the electricity department near Verka Chowk. Today both plants had no electricity from morning till 5 pm, which caused major disruptions in supply.”

The residents have reported extremely low pressure during morning and evening hours — many complain that water doesn’t even reach the first floor, let alone the second. Complaints have poured in from across the city.

Michael appealed to the public for cooperation, stating, “In such emergency conditions, the department becomes helpless. We request the public to support us. Full-pressure supply is expected to resume by evening.”

Councillor Anuradha Anand of Phase 7 echoed the concerns, stating that her area, too, has been hit by very low water supply. “This is an emergency-level issue, and water treatment plants should be connected to a dedicated electricity hotline,” she said. “I’ve discussed this with Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu and requested coordination with the electricity department for a permanent solution.”
