Coming as a surprise,Master of Computer Applications (MCA) emerged as the most sought after post-graduate course at Panjab University (PU) this year. The course fetched applications more than 32 times the number of total seats available in the morning as well evening sessions, which was the highest number ever received for a post-graduate regular course at PU.

Surprisingly, despite a pass percentage of not even more than 40 per cent in the first year of the corresponding bachelor’s degree course (BCA first year),the post-graduate course has topped the list of most preferred courses. Also, unlike other post-graduate courses which have a duration of two years, the three-year duration of the course has proved to be no deterrent to its popularity.

The PU Department of Computer Science and Applications received 2,849 applications for 85 seats – 40 in the morning session and 45 in the evening. The merit list of applicants who took the OCET exam conducted by Panjab University (PU) on June 12 will be released soon. The department attributes such a large number of applications to the multi-disciplinary avenues a candidate has after completing this professional course, with equal opportunities abroad.

“This year the department received around 400 more applications compared to the previous year. The reason MCA is emerging as a popular course is that unlike other professional courses, this does not let a degree-holder limit himself to one particular field ie Computers but offers multiple options,be it in the field of Arts or Science,” said the chairman of the Department,Prof Indu Chhabra.

When going through the profile of candidates who had applied and taken the entrance test for the course,it was revealed that it is not only graduates in Computer Applications (BCA) but other courses, too, like BCom,BA (Maths),BA (Computer Science) as well as those who have opted for Computer Science as an elective course.

A national high performer
