MC sub-committees yet to meet

Despite being constituted more than three months ago to discuss city-centric issues, some of the Municipal Corporation’s sub-committees have not met even once. The Slum Development Committee is yet to hold its first meeting. It was constituted to ensure that those residing in slums of the city were provided with basic amenities.

A member of the committee,Dr A P Sanwaria, said much needed to be done for colonies where people were residing without basic amenities. “Most members are not even aware of the exact number of colonies that are under the MC’s care. Let alone holding some serious discussions, the committee members have not met even once,” he said.

Another committee that has not met till date is the House Tax committee. In fact,it is among the least preferred committee by all councillors,as most of them are reluctant to become its members. The primary aim of the committee is to discuss imposition of house tax. None of the elected councillors are willing to impose tax on residents.

The committee has, therefore, not met at all. Chairman H C Kalyan said,“I do not want to burden the residents. Property tax is already being collected. Residents are already overburdened. We want to take decisions that are beneficial for residents. I am not in favour of imposing more taxes on them. If the agenda does come up for discussion,we will reject it. Even the move to impose property tax on shops in villages should be opposed.”
