Just when the tide seemed to turn in Air India’s favour,Mayank Tehlan came up with a Herculean effort and milked the opposition bowlers to help ONGC win the final by six wickets and claim the 17th All India JP Atray Memorial Cricket Tournament for Pearls Trophy played at Tau Devi Lal stadium,Sector 3,on Saturday. Mayank remained unbeaten on 69.
Earlier,Air India won the toss and elected to bat first. Their openers put on 37 runs for the first wicket before Sachin Rana was run-out for 19 by a fine throw from Radhey Shyam Gupta.
The other opener,Chandan Madan,was also run-out after scoring 20 off 26 balls. Then a fruitful partnership of 84 runs between skipper Mohammad Kaif and Naman Sharma took the teams total to 125 when Naman was cleaned up by Parveen Gupta for 46 off 58 balls studded with 2 boundaries and two towering sixes.
Kaif also departed when he played an uppish stroke to be caught and bowled by Parminder Awana after a superb knock of 54 off 82 balls. Deepak Joon was the other main contributor with the bat as he scored 52 off 55 balls. Parveen Gupta bagged two wickets for 38 runs.
Chasing the target,ONGC were rocked in the first over when their opener M Mudgil was castled by Rajat Bhatia without troubling the scorer. Then,in-form Sandeep Sharma and Tanmay Srivastava cobbled up 67 runs in the second wicket before Sandeep was snapped by Kaif off Sanjay Badhwar for 34 off 56 balls. Tanmay Srivastava contributed 28 runs.
Another fruitful partnership of 86 runs between Radhey Shayam Gupta and Mayank Tehlan for the fourth wicket took the total to 155 for 4 in 39.2 overs before Radheyshyam was snapped by wicket-keeper Chandan Madan of Sanjay Badhwar on 45 off 66 balls.
Mayank and Puneet Mehra were then associated in an unbeaten stand of 98 runs for the fifth wicket in 7.3 overs. Mayank Tehlan remained unbeaten on 69 off 82 balls consisting of four boundaries and two huge sixes. Puneet Mehra scored 49 not out and took the score to 233 for 4 in 46.5 overs. Sanjay Badhwar took two wickets. Sandeep Sharma won best batsman of the tournament award,while Parminder Awana bagged the best bowlers’ award. S.Suresh Kumar claimed the player of the tournament award.
