Manjinder Singh Lalpura, the Aam Aadmi Party’s MLA from Khadoor Sahib MLA who has opened a front against the Taran Tarn SSP, accusing him of accepting bribe and registering a fake case against his relative, is the son of a former police constable and himself is facing at least five cases.
The 38-year-old, who has studied till class 12, is a first time MLA having entered the Vidhan Sabha after defeating Congress’ Ramanjit Singh Sikki in 2022 by 16,491 votes. He had remained president of youth wing of AAP before the elections. About 10 days ago, he made a post on Facebook alleging corruption in Taran Tarn police department. Later, he had removed the post. On Wednesday, he put up another post accusing SSP Gurmeet Singh Chauhan of implicating his relative in sand mining case. While daring Chauhan to act against him, Lalpura announced to return his police security cover.
In his earlier post, Lalpura had said that people have been complaining to him that besides making “fake reports of grievous injuries, fake cases are also being registered by police by taking bribes in Tarn Taran.” The charges have been denied by the SSP.
Meanwhile, according to his election affidavit, Lalpura has five cases against him, out of which four were in Taran Tarn and one in Bathinda. He has been booked under Sections 506, 354, 188, 324, 270, 323, 148, and 283 IPC. These include criminal intimidation, assault on women, voluntarily causing hurt, disobedience of orders duly promulgated by public servant, charges related to malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life, rioting, armed with deadly weapon. He wrote in his affidavit that most of the cases were related to agitation.
Lalpura was not available for comments.
The AAP distanced itself from the controversy. A senior leader, however, said that it was embarrassing for the ruling party. “When an MLA accused the police of corruption publicly, it is embarrassing for the party. When the SSP says that MLA’s relative has been booked for illegal mining, it is again embarrassing,” said the leader.
The issue gave an ammunition to the Opposition with Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira saying the case against the MLA’s relative for illegal mining “exposes the false claims of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of having eradicated mining mafia and corruption”. Khaira said, “The open threat by the MLA to the SSP through social media also exposes that there’s no rule of law in Punjab and how the AAP is trying to politicize the force”.
Lalpura is the fourth MLA from the ruling AAP to embarrass the government with his outburst.
On Wednesday, Nabha MLA Gurdev Singh Dev Mann had expressed disappointment at not being offered a seat at the stage of a function organised by the department of agriculture. Earlier, Ropar MLA Dinesh
Chadha had made a video of revenue officials alleging that they did not work. The revenue officials had announced pen down strike from August 7.
Amritsar MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap too had shot a 40-minute long video of palm trees on key routes of Amritsar stating that the they were chopped off by authorities after a scam came to fore.
