At a road safety council meeting chaired by Adviser to the Administrator Vijay Dev Tuesday, approval was given to install traffic lights at several key roundabouts in the city. The engineering department was told to complete the work at the earliest, said the Adviser.
Traffic lights have been approved for the roundabout near the Sector 16 cricket stadium, Madhya Marg, Grain Market Chowk (Sector 26-28 chowk), PS East Chowk (Sector 7-27 chowk), Sector 33/34 roundabout, Attawa Chowk (Sector 42-43) and Sector 18-19 Malaria Chowk.
Officials said the decision was taken following recommendations of the police department that these roundabouts needed improved safety mechanisms owing to growing traffic.

Officials at the meeting also deliberated on the construction of a railway underpass in Manimajra. Dev has directed the engineering department to coordinate with the Ambala division of the Railways and start the construction work at the earliest.
The meeting also centred on the introduction of an intelligent traffic management system in Chandigarh. An agency to prepare the entire road map has been hired and it will submit its report within six to eight months after studying the current traffic scenario in the city. It will also be studied as to how residents will encounter minimal red light signals at a particular speed.
