A surprise inspection of the Burail Model Jail was conducted on Sunday by Justice Alok Singh,who is a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and an Administrative Judge of the Chandigarh Sessions Division. Justice Alok Singh made the visit along with District and Sessions Judge,Chandigarh,S.K. Goel,and Chief Judicial Magistrate,Chandigarh,J.S. Sidhu.
Alok Kumar,the Inspector General of Prisons of Chandigarh and Balbir Singh Dhol,the Superintendent of the jail were also present during the inspection. The Justice took a round of the Jail and heard the grievances of the inmates. Some undertrials lodged in the jail made requests for medical treatment and immediate directions were issued to the Superintendent and the Medical Officer for the treatment to be carried out.
Life Convict Raj Pal,who appeared before the Justice,pleaded that though orders for his premature release had already been passed by the Chandigarh Administration,he had not been able to furnish the surety. Directions were issued to the jail authorities to send his case to the District and Sessions Judge of Chandigarh for consideration.
Some prisoners appeared before Justice Alok Singh and requested speedy disposal of their pending cases in the courts and Justice Singh issued directions in this regard to the District and Sessions Judge of Chandigarh.
Justice Singh also visited the IGNOU study centre cum recreational centre in which inmates were practicing music. He also visited the library,dispensary,interview room and gymnasium. He directed the officers in charge to repair some machines in the gymnasium. The Justice also checked the food being given to the jail inmates The inspection carried on for over one and a half hours.
