The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) on Monday announced that it would hold its membership drive followed by full organisational elections in Chandigarh. The last date for submission of forms is June 13.
IYC national president Rajeev Satav said India was witnessing the beginning of a new era when young political leaders of the party would be directly elected by its members. The change in the political system of electing leaders rather than nominating them is a historic development in the politics of India. This will be a true democracy, he added.
The Youth Congress returning officer said it was for the first time that internal party elections were being held in the Indian Youth Congress.
Meenakshi Natarajan, the AICC secretary in-charge of the Youth Congress, said such an elaborate election process had never been started by any political party anywhere in the world before. This was the only way to galvanise the youth of the country to serve the nation,to represent the aspirations of a new generation of people that want to break away from the old and chart out a new course.
Foundation for Advanced Management of Elections (FAME) would independently audit the membership and election process and ensure that it was impartial and open to participation for all. FAME is an NGO created by J M Lyngdoh, former chief election commissioner.
