Depressed,youth commits suicide at Sector-24 residence
Chandigarh:
A 19-year old youth committed suicide by hanging himself at his Sector-24 residence on Saturday. The deceased,Amit Kumar,was working as a waiter with a private catering company. The police have recovered a suicide note from him in which he had stated that nobody should be held responsible for his death. In his suicide note,Amit also stated that he was mentally disturbed for some unknown reason. He was residing along with his family in the government quarters and his father Sukhbir Singh is a Class IV employee at the PGI. The deceased is survived by his parents and four siblings. The police have initiated inquest proceedings in this regard.

30-year-old biker mowed down by tractor-trolley
Kharar:
A KHARAR resident Sarabjeet Singh,30,was mowed down by a recklessly driven tractor-trolley on the busy Kharar-Mohali stretch of National Highway-21 here on Friday night. Singh,who runs 6Ten departmental store in Sector 68,Mohali,was going back to home in Ranjit Nagar here around 11 pm. When he was about to turn towards the Jhungian village link road from the highway,a speeding tractor-trolley came from the wrong side and ran over him,leaving him seriously injured. He was rushed to the Kharar Civil Hospital from where he was referred to the PGIMER in Chandigarh but he died succumbed to injuries on his way. The police have booked the tractor-trolley driver,Surjit Singh. for causing death by rash and negligent driving. Sarabjeet is survived by a wife and a three-year-old son.

Two farmers robbed of Rs 1.82 lakh
Kharar:
In a broad daylight strike,two farmers were robbed of Rs 1.82 lakh cash in Kharar on Saturday. Bhupinder Singh of Garanga village near here and Sher Singh of Sill village near here had withdrawn the cash from a local branch of the Cooperative Bank and were heading back home when two unknown bikers snatched away their cash bag on Badala Road here at around 11 am .

Both the sexagenarian victims told the police that after withdrawing the cash (Sher Singh’s Rs 1.3 lakh) and Bhupinder Singh’s Rs 52,000),they were riding on a motorcycle and on way,another bike,coming from behind,came close to them,and before they could realize anything,the pillion rider on the other bike snatched away cash bag from Bhupinder,who was riding pillion,and sped away. Though the robbed farmers raised an alarm and even gave a chase to the running away robbers but all in vain.

The local police immediately sounded an alert but no clue of the robbers was found as yet.

Shivalik Foundation annual function
Panchkula:
The 16th annual function of the Shivalik Foundation was held at Aggarwal Bhawan,Sector 16. Highlighting the activities of the Foundation,its president Subhash Bansal said that it spends Rs 4 lakh every year on scholarships for around 300 poor students as well as clothes and shoes for children from the economically weaker sections. The Foundation also runs a school for giving elementary education to street children and a tailoring school. A cultural programme was presented by the school students

Strawberry school prize distribution
Chandigarh:
The students of Strawberry Public School,Baltana,presented a display of song and dance at their annual prize distribution function on the eve of Children’s Day. A fancy dress competition was held on the occasion and sweets were distributed among the children.

Conference about online business
Mohali:
Gian Jyoti Institute of Management and Technology (GJIMT),Mohali,organised the 6th national conference on Emerging Trends in Online Business: Challenges and Opportunities at its campus in Phase II here on Saturday. GJIMT Chairman J S Bedi said,“In the era of globalisation,e-marketing has become a potent tool to promote business at both the micro and macro levels and the need of the hour is to use e-marketing in rural areas to promote small and big business.” A total of 52 papers were presented by members of academia and industry.

Tax Bar workshop conducted in Mohali
Mohali:
The District Tax Bar Association,Mohali,conducted a workshop on the new amendments in various law provisions pertaining to tax issues here on Saturday. Sushil Ghai spoke on the latest amendment under the Income Tax Act,1961,along with provision of TDS in the light of the Finance Act,2010. The other key speaker Sandeep Goyal spoke on the provisions of Works Contract under the Punjab Value Added Tax Act,2005,in the light of the latest High Court and Supreme Court judgments.

Green walk to celebrate Children’s Day
Patiala:
St Xavier’s International School,Patiala,on Saturday organised a Green Walk to commemorate Children’s Day. It marked an attempt to raise awareness among the public on receding greenery and other environmental issues. The children carried slogans and banners and distributed flyers with the appeal,“Leave your children with a Green Legacy”.

PTU zonal fest gets underway at Kharar
Kharar:
The two-day Punjab Technical University (PTU) Inter-College Zonal Youth Festival (ZONE-III) concluded at GGS Sachdeva College of Management and Technology,Kharar,on Saturday. Students from various colleges of the North region participated in the festival. Brij Pal Sachdeva,Chairman,GGS Sachdeva Group of Institutions,inaugurated the fest while PTU Registrar H S Bains and Director (Recruitment) R P Bhardwaj presided over the inaugural function. The first overall trophy was won by Rayat-Bahra,Sahauran,while second overall trophy was bagged by RBCEBTW,Sahauran.

Blood donation for dengue patients
Patiala:
At least 69 persons donated blood at a special blood donation camp organised by the Red Cross and Youth Club,NCC,NSS and Endeavour Club of the MBA Department of Khalsa College,Patiala. Gurmohan Singh Walia,Director (Education),SGPC,Amritsar,inaugurated the camp. The blood was sent to the blood bank of Rajindera Hospital,Patiala,for Dengue patients.

Lecture on competitiveness starts at Patiala
Patiala:
A special lecture on Global Competitiveness was organsied by the Commerce Department of Multani Mal Modi College,Patiala,by S C Vaidya from the University Business School,Panjab University,Chandigarh. He emphasized that Indian Business needs to be restructured and go through a process of creativity.

Chief Architect holds interaction with students
Mohali:
Balwinder Saini,Chief Architect,Punjab ,visited Surya School of Architecture (SSA) near here today to interact with the students on,“Design and concepts of building projects for Punjab ”. Also,present in the interaction were Prof Rajnish Wattas,Prof Bipin Malik and other faculty members of SSA. Saini discussed her concepts and designs of various constructed,under construction and upcoming projects to widen the horizon of the students towards the architectural spaces of the buildings. She also showed the state-of-art infrastructure and facilities in the buildings of Punjab.

Shopkeeper assaulted in ‘road rage’ incident
Chandigarh:
A Sector 15-based shopkeeper,Sanjeev,was assaulted with baseball bats and rods following a road rage incident in Sector 42. The police have registered a case but no arrests have been made so far. Sanjeev had borrowed the Swift Desire of Varinder Mahajan,rehri market president of Sector 15,and was going towards the Sector 43 bus stand to pick up some guests. Owner of a ready-made garments shop,Sanjeev was going towards the bus stand when another Swift overtook him at the Sector 42 small roundabout.

Four to five youths then damaged the window panes of his car with baseball bats and also attacked Sanjeev who sustained injuries.

Meanwhile,police post In-Charge of Malloya SI Baldev was passing by and saw the youths fleeing after beating up Sanjeev. Baldev gave them a chase,following which the youths raised the speed of their car.

Their car then rammed into a road beam and its tyre burst. The youths then fled leaving the car behind.

The police impounded the car and it was found to belong to a Khuda Ali Sher resident,Kiranveeer.

“It seems to be an incident of road rage and we have registered a case. No arrests have been made so far,” said Anokh Singh,SHO,Sector 36 police station.

Fire at Dadumajra dumping ground
Chandigarh:
A minor fire broke out at the dumping ground at Dadumajra today evening. As the residents in the adjoining area found it difficult to breathe due to the smoke,they saw fire at the dumping ground. The garbage dumped there had caught fire. The fire department was informed who brought the fire under control. An area resident says that the fire tender that came for fire fighting could not extinguish the fire as the pipes were leaking. Another fire tender was pressed into action and then the fire was extinguished.

Conference on nuclear medicine enters day 3
Chandigarh:
On the third day of the 42nd annual conference of the Society of Nuclear Medicine,Vikram Sarabhai Memorial Oration was delivered by Dr Diwakar Jain,a renowned nuclear cardiologist based in USA,through a satellite link. Jain spoke extensively on Molecular Imaging: Future of cardiovascular imaging. An another satellite lecture was given by Dr Phillip Grammaticos,who is the President of Hellenic Society of Nuclear Medicine in Greece on the importance of lymphatic system,which has a very important role in spread of cancer.

The third day of the conference was as informative as the previous days and the topics discussed were clinical applications of PET/CT,basic science lectures,newer radiopharmaceuticals and high tech technology in imaging systems.

Seminar on diabetic retinopathy to be held today
Chandigarh:
GEI Chandigarh,an eye care chain,is holding a free public education seminar on diabetic retinopathy on the World Diabetic Day on Sunday at Sector 9 in Chandigarh. The education seminar which will be held from 10 am to noon. “The seminar will aim at raising public awareness of this dreaded disease,the precautions necessary for early detection and the treatments available for diabetic retinopathy,” organisers said. Apart from the free public education seminar,a free eye checkup of diabetic patients will also be held.

21 girls from Bapu Dham felicitated
Chandigarh:
On the eve of Children’s Day,NGO Yuvsatta organised a felicitation event for the real-life heroes to inspire spirit of selfless service among children. Apart from them meritorious girls from Bapu Dham were also honoured. The function was organized at GGDSD College,Sector 32 and was supported by HQ Western Command.

Among those felicitated were Lance Naik Sanjay Kumar who fought the Kargil war and Brig Sant Singh (retd),a hero of the Bangladesh war of liberation. Children were told about their acts of bravery and the relevance of decorations like PVC and MVC. Twenty one meritorious girls from Bapu Dham Colony were honoured to highlight relevance of girl’s education for a fair and just society. Parents of these girls were also made to sign an affidavit,promising to facilitate their daughter’s education. Bicycles were presented to the girls.

Exhibition on diabetes gets under way
Chandigarh:
The Director of Government Medical College Hospital,Sector 32,Prof Raj Bhadhur on Saturday inaugurated the nutrition exhibition on diabetes. The exhibition was organised by the department of dietetics. Poster and models on diabetes were displayed which were invited from various institutes of Punjab,Haryana,Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh. The chief dietitian Madhu Arora explained the posters and models to the to Director Raj Bhadhur. The display included a functional chart of dietetics department,do’s and don’ts of diabetes and besides other themes. A diet counselling session was also done during the exhibition. The Director at the end distributed the prizes to winners of models and poster exhibition. The first prize was won by Disha Chaudhary and Richa Singh in poster and model competition respectively.
