3-yr-old found abandoned
Ambala: A three-year-child was found abandoned at the Football Chowk,Ambala Cantonment on Thursday. A tea stall owner found the child and reported the matter to the police,who asked him to keep the boy till his guardians were located. But since nobody came to take him back,he has been sent to the Chhachhrauli Orphanage for the time being.
Youths snatch Rs 50,000 from a woman
Ambala: A woman,who had withdrawn Rs 50,000 from a bank,was robbed of the entire amount by two motorcycle-borne youths in the Ramkishan Colony,Ambala Cantonment on Friday. The woman was identified as Bakrol and she had withdrawn the amount to get her father,Sher Khan,admitted in the PGI Chandigarh. She had taken a rickshaw to reach home,but as soon as she arrived near her house,the youths snatched her bag and escaped. A complaint was lodged with the HB Colony PP,who started the investigation.
Three arrested for stealing luxury bath fittings
Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Police arrested three youths and recovered luxury bath fittings worth Rs 2.50 lakh from their possession. Two of the accused were arrested during a naka on the road dividing Sectors 36 and 42 on April 12. During police interrogation they disclosed that the bath fittings were stolen from Lider Sanitations,Plot No D-101,Industrial Area,Phase VII,Mohali during the intervening night of March 28 and 29.
On Thursday,the police arrest Manoj Kumar,the kingpin and recovered 10 chrome plated water taps from him. A local court remanded him to police custody till April 19 and following interrogation the police recovered 12 LPG cylinders,a motorcycle and a computer from him.
Standing wheat crop goes up in flames
Ambala: Incidents of ripe wheat crop catching fire continued in the district on Friday. The fire,which spread to the fields of village Nagla Rajputan,destroyed two acres of crop worth thousands of rupees. The cause of fire could not be ascertained.
Canada comes calling to Patiala students
PATIALA: The Shri Guru Harkrishan College of Indo-Canadian Education signed an overseas agreement with the Lambton College (Govt -aided college),Canada. Kurtis Gray International Projects Education and Gagan CEO Intellectual Solutions from Canada came here for the inaugural ceremony near CMT campus. Kurtis interacted with students and delivered a presentation on future prospects of Indian students in Canada. Baltej Singh Mann,former Dean and BB Singla from Punjabi University spoke about the importance of foreign education for Indian students. The key element of this overseas partnership agreement was that it allowed Indian students to complete Canadian studies in this college at Patiala,earn credits and then apply for visa either in second year or third year of the programme.

In the first fest,various Companies had short-listed nearly 125 students for placement in the fields of finance,marketing,human resources,operations and so on. Omaxe expands in Patiala,launches shopping-cum-office complex
PATIALA: Omaxe has launched Patialas largest organised shopping-cum-office (SCO) complex in a joint development agreement with the Patiala Urban Planning and Development Authority (PDA). Nearly 77 crore-SCO complex has limited shops in various sizes and is a part of the PDA-Omaxe City,a self-sufficient township built in 333 acres on the outskirts of Patiala. The space in this SCO complex will be allotted through an open auction on April 19 and 20 at the PDA-Omaxe City. The shops and office space in SCO complex are priced at Rs 30,000 per square yard.
PU students to meet UT Advisor over tree felling
Chandigarh: Panjab University students,who protested against felling of trees in Sector 15 on Thursday,met Municipal Commissioner Dr Roshan Sunkaria on Friday,requesting him to stall cutting of any more trees,till they met the Union Territory Advisor. The students had opposed axing of 100 trees in the sector for the purpose of widening of roads. Unsuccessful at saving the trees,the students will now meet the UT Advisor to request him to stop the drive.
MHRD task force assesses PUs income,expenses
CHANDIGARH: In order to gauge the magnitude of financial assistance needed to upgrade the existing facilities at Panjab University,the task force of the Ministry of Human Resource and Development,Government of India,visited the campus on Friday. The team met some department heads and others in order to collect and collate the various expenses and incomes through the courses offered at the university in order to finalise their report.
Lecture on foreign policy at PU on Monday
CHANDIGARH: Panjab University will play host to Dr Shibashis Chatterjee,associate professor at Jadavpur University,who will deliver a lecture on Global Power Shifts and Indian Foreign Policy on April 19. The lecture is being organised under the special lecture series and will be held at 3 pm in the ICSSR hall in the university. Dr Chatterjee holds a PhD degree from Jadavpur University and has been an associate professor in the Department of International Relations since 1997. He was awarded the CODESRIA-SEPHIS Fellowship 2009 and the Nehru-Fulbright Visiting Lecturer Fellowship 2010-2011. He is the author o f Nuclear Non-proliferation and the Problem of Threshold States (1999) and co-editor of India s Foreign Policy (Pearson,2009) apart from being published in various international journals like South Asian Survey,Economic and Political Weekly among others.
DPS in a festive mood
CHANDIGARH: Delhi Public School,Chandigarh,celebrated Baisakhi and Ambedkar Jayanti by organising a special assembly on Friday. The school choir presented a shabad recital followed by a speech on Dr B R Ambedkar. Some students performed bhangra depicting the mood of the harvest festival.

Anti-encroachment drive in Sector 21
CHANDIGARH: A team from the Municipal Corporation held an anti-encroachment drive in Shastri Market,Sector 21,and removed 40 illegal structures. The drive was held under the supervision of Additional Commissioner P K Sharma. A fire officer,enforcement inspector K D Sharma and other staff were part of the drive.
Parwanoo bypass: Land handed over to NHAI
Chandigarh: After a long wait,the left over portion of land required for the construction of Pinjore-Parwanoo bypass was handed over to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). The construction work is being carried out by the JP Associates on behalf of the NHAI. According to project head,JP Associates,R K Khatri,The 3.73 hectares of land in Haryana and 5.11 hectares in Himachal has finally been handed over to us and we plan to start the work on it soon so that the entire project of four-laning of Zirakpur to Parwanoo could be completed on time.
KV-47 celebrates annual day
CHANDIGARH: Kendriya Vidyalaya ,Sector 47,celebrated their annual function in the LECMA Auditorium on Friday. Air Officer Commanding 12 Wing and Chairman VMC Air Commodore Rajeev Sachdeva was the chief guest. U N Khaware,assistant commissioner,Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (Regional Office),graced the occasion as guest of honour. Students of all age groups made the day special with skits,dances and melodious songs. While some sang popular songs like All izz well and Heal the World,others recited a Hindi poem by celebrated poet Surya Kant Tripathi Nirala. Little ones danced on peppy folk songs dressed in Rajasthani costumes and some did the Lilliputian dance. Meritorious students were honoured with prizes by Neeta Sachdeva,president,Air Force Wives Welfare Association (L).
