Man trespasses into Kharar house,tries to rape teacher;arrested
KHARAR: A Chandigarh resident tried to rape a young teacher after trespassing into her house when she was alone in Kharar. However,thevictim,in her early 30s,overpowered and caught hold of accused Kamaljeet Singh Saini of Sector 19-C,Chandigarh. Saini,in his early 40s,was posted as a steno typist with the Punjab State Electricity Board in Patiala. Though he claimed that he was on long leave of five years,preliminary investigations revealed that he was absent from duty,said Investigating Officer ASI Ramji Dass. It was around 9 am when the victim’s husband had left for his job but she had not gone to work due to some reason and was alone at her house that Saini called her up over phone and desired to meet her. “I flatly refused him as I did not know him but after sometime,he trespassed into my house and started harassing me physically,” the teacher told the police.
During preliminary police interrogation,the accused has named a TV journalist,who he claimed had given the victim’s telephone number and asked him to contact her on his (journalist’s) behalf,the IO revealed,while adding that the accused also claimed that the said journalist was close to the victim. However,the police were yet to locate the said journalist as he was not found at a local address provided by the accused. The local police procured one-day custody of the accused from the court of Sub-Divisional Magistrate K K Goel here this afternoon.

Man arrested for raping minor
CHANDIGARH: The police on Wednesday arrested a Sector-46 resident for allegedly raping a woman on the pretext of marrying her. The police said 17-and-a-half-year-old victim in her complaint accused one Arvind of rape on the pretext of marrying her. He used to live in her neighbourhood in Ram Darbar where they became friends. When the girl’s family came to know about their relationship,they told the accused to marry the girl. Unable to reach any consensus,the victim’s family reported the matter to the police. A case has been registered.

City property dealers donate Rs 1 lakh
CHANDIGARH: During a function organised by the Property Consultant Association,Chandigarh at the Institute for the Blind,Sector 26,the association presented Rs 1.10 lakh to the chairman of the Institute,Major General Rajendra Nath (retired). Ram Niwas,Home Secretary,Chandigarh Administration,presided over the function organized by the Property Consultants’ Association,Chandigarh.

One arrested for cheating
Chandigarh: The Economic Offences Wing of the UT police today arrested a man for allegedly cheating a city resident of Rs 5.5 lakh by promising him to send him abroad. A case was registered on the complaint of Manoj Kumar in May 2008 under Sections 420/120-B of the IPC in the Sector-34 police station. The complainant paid Rs 1,50,000 to Vinod Kumar but he neither sent him abroad nor returned his money.

Wi-Fi system introduced in Patiala college
PATIALA: The Khalsa College,Patiala,has become the only college in the city to introduce a Wi-Fi system. With this,the Internet facility can be accessible for students and teachers at any part of the college campus.
Dharminder Singh Ubha,Principal,Khalsa College Patiala,said Internet was essential in order to make students aware of contemporary educational techniques.

Suspended cops remanded to two-day police custody
Ambala: Four police personnel from Shehzadpur police station,who were placed under suspension by the Superintendent of Police Bharati Arora yesterday for selling confiscated liquor,were produced in the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Naraingarh Sudeep Goel today. Besides,wine contractor and salesmen were also produced in the court. The policemen — Shehzadpur SHO Sham Sunder,ASI Shamsher Singh,Security Agent Ram Gopal and constable Jaipal — were remanded to two-day police custody.

Press Club elections challenged
CHANDIGARH: Anshul Berry,Civil Judge,Senior Division,Chandigarh,today issued notices to the president of the Chandigarh Press Club Sarbjit Pandher and other defendants,including Returning Officer G C Bhardwaj following a civil suit filed by Sanjiv Pandey,Chanchal Manohar Singh and others challenging the elections. They said that having served as the president of the club for two consecutive terms,he was ineligible to contest as per the memorandum and articles of the Association. The court has fixed February 15 as the next date of hearing.

Mobile snatched in Mohali,car stolen from Kharar
MOHALI: A motorcyclist armed with an iron rod snatched away the mobile phone of a Mohali resident from Chawla Chowk in Phase VII in the wee hours,the police said here today. Damanjeet Singh of Sector 70 here reported to the police that he was waiting for his brother,who was coming from Delhi,near Chawla Chowk around 1 am and was talking on his mobile phone while standing on the roadside. “Suddenly a motorcyclist stopped near me and threatened me with an iron rod before snatching away my mobile phone,” said Singh. The police have identified the snatcher as Sandeep Singh of Todarwal village in Nabha on the basis of vital clues provided by the victim and booked him under Sections 382,356 and 379 of the IPC but no arrest could be made as yet.
In Kharar,a Tata Indica car was stolen parked outside a house in Ward 3. Dayal Singh reported to the police that he had parked his car outside his house before leaving the home in his another acr but when he returned back,he was shocked to find his parked car missing. The police have lodged a case of theft against an unidentified person.

Staff of immigration firm booked for Rs 60 lakh fraud
MOHALI: Two employees of a local immigration firm have been booked on charges of defrauding the firm to the tune of Rs 60 lakh,the police said here today. The accused are Deep Sharma of Sunny Enclave in Kharar and Gurpreet Singh Virk of Aastha Enclave in Kharar. While Sharma was working as an accountant,Gurpreet was treasury manager at Worldwide Immigration Consultancy Services in Industrial Area,Phase VI,Mohali,the police informed. Company’s Estate Officer Rajiv Bajaj complained to the police that both the accused used to handle the cash receipts of the company and when the accounts were examined yesterday,fraud of around Rs 60 lakh was detected. The complainant apprehended the involvement of the accused in the alleged fraud. The police have booked the accused under Sections 406,408,420,465,467,471 and 120-B of the IPC but no arrests were made as yet.

BJP protest on Saturday against rising prices
Chandigarh: The BJP will hold a demonstration against the rising prices on February 6. The local unit of the party had been holding protests at the level of mandals and districts. On February 6,demonstrators would march towards Punjab Raj Bhawan and a memorandum would be handed over to the Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj Patil.
Addressing a press conference today,president of the city unit of BJP Sanjay Tandon said that the Congress led UPA government had failed to control the rising prices. “BJP has started a nationwide programme ‘Mandal se Sansad tak’ against the rising prices. On February 6,we would be holding demonstration at the Sector 7-8 roundabout. The party workers would gherao the Parliament in March,” he said. Tandon blamed the policies of the UPA government for the spiraling prices. He said that the government needs to control forward trading. The hoarding of goods needs to be stopped.

Five injured in group clash
PANCHKULA: As many as five persons were injured in a group clash between the workers of BJP and BSP at Gandhi Colony in Mansa Devi Complex on Tuesday night. The injured — Harnam Singh,Lokhi Ram,Hira Lal,Ramvati and Devashi — were rushed to General Hospital in Sector 6. According to the police,the groups had also clashed on Monday night,but later a compromise was reached. No case has been registered till the filing of the report.
