A lower court on Friday acquitted a man accused of rape after the victim turned hostile. Accused Dalip Kumar was arrested by the police on a complaint registered on July 13,2009 filed by mother of the 15- year-old victim. The complainant had alleged that the accused had kidnapped her daughter who was later recovered from the custody of the accused after two days. The victim,while recording her statement before the magistrate,had also claimed that the accused had taken her to a place in Himachal Pradesh and repeatedly raped her for two days. Taking a U-turn today,the victim denied having been kidnapped or raped. Even the victim’s mother and other relatives,including her maternal uncle,refused to have lodged the complaint.

Cop dismissed for smuggling weapons
A head constable of the UT police,who was booked in a case of weapon smuggling in April last year,was dismissed on Friday. Balbir Singh was arrested on April 27,2009 when the police had recovered some weapons from his residence in Sector 23. At that time,he was serving as the in-charge of the malkhana at the Sector-17 police station from where he had reportedly smuggled the seized weapons. Five cartridges of 12 bore,one of SGLG,sixteen of .303,fourteen of SLR,seven of AK-47 and twenty of 32 bore were recovered from his house.

Conference on advanced computing
A two-day AICTE sponsored national conference on advanced computing,communication engineering and technology (NCACCET-10) was inaugurated by Dr N Sathyamurthy,director,IISER,Mohali,at the Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology on Friday. Principal Dr B S Pabla stressed on the need for interaction and sharing of information among individuals and groups working in the field. UIET Director Dr Renu Vig stressed on the development of communication systems for advancement of computing. Deepak Bhalla,Global Delivery Manager,Infosys Technologies,Chandigarh and Dr Sanjeev Sofat,Head of Computer Science department,PEC University of Technology addressed the seminar. Dr Manpreet Singh Gujral said the organising committee received 270 papers for the conference of which 52 were selected for presentation. In addition,28 selected papers will be printed in international journals.

‘Indian students have potential to become great entrepreneurs’
“Indian students are highly talented and can become the world’s best entrepreneurs,” said Kamal Wadhera,founder and CEO of ‘Top Careers and You’. Wadhera was speaking at a session organised by TiE at Chitkara Institute in Sector 25,Chandigarh,on Friday. As part of its outreach programme,TiE Punjab and Chandigarh regularly organise talks by eminent and successful entrepreneurs to motivate students. “Indian students are not content in just learning the ordinary but are ever eager to further hone their skills and participate in a number of activities that help build up their personality. Students in other countries,however,are complacent and by and large not ready to go beyond their classroom studies,” he pointed out. Puneet Vatsayan,president,TiE Punjab and Chandigarh,echoed the sentiment.

Tiny tots of Hansraj Public School sparkle at annual function
The annual show of the pre-primary wing of Hansraj Public School,Sector 6,Panchkula,Sparkles,turned to be a fun-filled bonanza for tiny tots who soaked themselves in the spirit of the festival by participating in many events and competitions. The entire wing wore a colourful look as students came dressed in their best attires on Friday. Principal Jaya Bhardwaj presided over the function and exhorted the students to develop sportsmanship spirit. Chandigarh family booked for immigration fraud
Four members of a Chandigarh family,based in Sector 18,were booked on charges of cheating,criminal conspiracy and criminal intimidation in an immigration case,the police said on Friday. Sham Singh of Jharheri village near Kurali reported to the police that Ashwani Kumar,his wife Vijay Lakshmi and sons allegedly took Rs 3 lakh cash,his passport and other relevant documents on the pretext of sending him abroad. It was added that the family threatened him with dire consequences when he demanded his money back. The police have lodged a case under Sections 420,120-B and 506 of the IPC against the accused. No arrests,however,were confirmed as yet.

8-yr-old dies in road accident
An eight-year-old boy,identified as Pranam,died in a road accident at the Sector 46-47-48-49 roundabout here on Friday. The police said Mukesh,father of the deceased,was in a state of shock while his wife was also seriously injured in the accident. No complaint had been filed in the case yet,the police added.

Couple commits suicide
A girl and her lover allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a moving train near the Ambala Cantonment railway station on Friday. Jayashri,who was living with her maternal uncle at Shahpur village,and Charanjit of the same village,were missing since January 19. Their families were allegedly opposed to their marriage. The Government Railway Police has registered a case and begun investigation.

Cops get two-year jail term for graft
Two UT police personnel,who were pronounced guilty in a case of corruption on Thursday,were sentenced to two years’ rigorous imprisonment by a CBI court on Friday. The Special CBI Court of Darshan Singh imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each on Sub-Inspector Sukhdeep Singh and Head Constable Iqbal Singh as well. A case had been registered against the duo in 2007 for accepting a bribe of Rs 12,000 from the owner of a Sector 34-based travel agency. Both were posted at the Sector 34 police station at the time. Meanwhile,a Haryana Police constable Ved Prakash from CIA was awarded two years’ imprisonment under the Prevention of Corruption Act by a court on Friday. The complainant,Sonu,had alleged that Prakash had demanded Rs 5,000 for clearing his name from a theft case. Sonu approached the Vigilance department who arrested the constable while accepting the bribe.
