New passport office opens in Industrial Area
Chandigarh: A regional passport office has started functioning from Industrial Area Phase II. The residents of the tricity as well as from various districts of Punjab would be able to apply for passports from here. The RPO has been started in collaboration with Tata Consultancy Services.
The RPO in Sector 34 would entertain requests only for making passports under tatkal. During the trial run on Tuesday,applicants expressed satisfaction with the services.
“The new facility is providing adequate infrastructure. Despite spending more then three hours in this office,I am satisfied that my work has been done. All documents were completed by the officials present there. Now within reasonable time,I will receive my passport. The staff was very helpful especially to senior citizen and students,” said Baljit Singh from Kharar. Another applicant,a senior citizen who had come from Sangrur,expressed satisfaction with the services rendered. He said,”I did not face any problems in the new passport office. I spent four hours here,but now I will not have to come to Chandigarh again for completion of any documents. The officials ensured that there was no hitch.”
Central team visits anganwadi centre in Mohali
MOHALI: A TEAM of the Union government visited the anganwadi centre running from the premises of the Government Elementary School in Phase II here today.
Led by Secretary,Union Department of Women and Child Development,DK Sikri,the Central team inspected the facilities available at the centre besides interacting with the children and staffers present there. Sikri enquired from the centre head about the supply of eatables and medical check-up of the children at the centre. While inspecting the attendance register,the team head instructed the centre head to ensure proper supply of eatables,regular medical check-up and other facilities provided by the Union government for the centre children besides imparting them basic education.
Principal Secretary,Social Security,Women and Child Development,Punjab,TR Sarangal,Director Kavita Singh,Civil Surgeon Dr PK Sridhar and Programme Officer Neetu Gupta apprised the Central team about the state of affairs at the anganwari centres across the state.
Later,the Central team also visited anganwari centres in Phase V here,Mundi Kharar,Kharar and Chanalon village in this district.
NTAS concludes seven-show theatre campaign
PATIALA: The National Theatre Arts Society (NTAS) Patiala concluded their seven-show Tiranga Theatre Campaign,with the presentation of Tiranga-Sandhya,a two-hour national integration programme of music,dance,Ajmer Aulakhs Punjabi musical play Sukki Kukh,humourous Patangbaaz and Bhand-Naqlan,organised by Pran Sabharwal and Sunita Sabharwal at Central State Library Hall on Wednesday. Former Patiala commissioner S K Ahulwalia presided over the function and socialite Dr Naveen Saronwala was the guest of honour.
Cops lock woman journalist in police station,release her later
CHANDIGARH: The employees at the Sector-3 police station locked a woman journalist who had gone to fill a bottle from a water cooler at the police station without seeking permission from anyone. It was only after the intervention of other mediapersons that she was released. A complaint has been lodged with the Chandigarh IGP seeking action against the erring policemen.
BSNL officer booked
Ambala: Haryana BSNL general manager R K Dabra was booked by the police for misbehaving with a woman junior telecom officer on Wednesday. An FIR was also registered against Chief General Manager A K Gupta,who was found allegedly shielding the erring GM and delaying the case. Dabra was found guilty of misbehaving with a junior officer after a four-member enquiry committee released a report.
Talk by Tribune assistant editor
Chandigarh: A talk on Reading and writing in the Internet age by Roopinder Singh,assistant editor,The Tribune,Chandigarh,was held on Wednesday. Singh began his discussion on the emerging trends of reading e-books through I-pad,Nook and Kindle. He also highlighted that e-books were more expensive than hard cover books. In India,the publishing industry has grown by 60 per cent in the last couple of years and it is worth 2.9 billion dollars. The emergence of e-books has changed the relationship of the author with the reader, he said.
Admit cards for PhD entrance dispatched
Chandigarh: The admit cards for PhD Entrance Test-2010,to be conducted by the Panjab University,Chandigarh on August 22,have been dispatched to all eligible candidates by registered post. Those who do not receive the admit cards by August 19 must get the duplicate cards from the University Office (CET Cell,Aruna Ranjit Chandra Hall,near Post Office) on August 20 and 21,after completing the pre-requisite requirements (Para 11,Page 10) as detailed in the prospectus,said Controller of Examinations.
St Josephs School holds group song contest
CHANDIGARH: The inter-school group song competition Jashan-e-Azadi-2010,was celebrated at St Josephs Senior Secondary School on Wednesday. As many as 16 teams from different schools of Chandigarh participated in the competition. N S Rathore,lecturer in Music from Dev Samaj College of Education for Women,and Shalini Sharma from Government Senior Secondary School,Sector 26,were the judges for the event. The competition provided students with a platform to showcase their talent. All teams put in their best efforts. The theme of songs was related to patriotism and cultural heritage of the country. The judges then presented trophies to the first three winner teams,while all those who participated were handed over certificates. Bhavan Vidyalaya,Sector 27,bagged the first prize,second prize was held by Manav Mangal High School,Sector 21,St Marys School,Sector 46 B got the third prize and consolation prize was given to Ryan International,Sector 49.
Placement drive held in MCM DAV
CHANDIGARH: The placement cell of Post Graduate Government College for Girls,Sector 11,in collaboration with IBM Daksh,Gurgaon,organised placement drive in the college. The process started with an interactive session in which the students were given tips on personality development,communication skills and interview skills. More than 200 students of BCA,BSc,BA,BCom,PGDCA final year appeared for placements. The recruitment process had three stages which were designed to assess personality traits such as communication skill,presentation,current affairs and analytical skills. As many as 50 students were selected and given appointment letters.
Two youths held with stolen bike
MOHALI: Two youths were arrested with a motorcycle,which the police claimed to have been stolen from Chandigarh. Natives of Uttar Pradesh,Ved Prakash and Bittu were presently putting up at a rented accommodation in Nayagaon village near Chandigarh,the police said here today. On a tip-off,a police party intercepted the youths near Karoran T-point and on checking,the youths failed to produce any documents of Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle,which they were riding. During sustained interrogation,they confessed stealing the bike from Chandigarh few days back,the police claimed,while adding that a case under Sections 379 and 411 of the IPC was registered against the youths,who were put under further interrogation to ascertain their links and other thefts,if any,they had committed in the past.
