Woman booked for suicide bid
A resident of Sector 71 here Mandeep Kaur was booked on the charges of attempt to suicide and attempt to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life,the police said here today. After setting ablaze certain household items,Kaur allegedly doused kerosene oil on her body and was about to torch herself when her husband Sukhjinder Singh Brar and his parents somehow managed to catch hold of her,Investigating Officer Fateh Faqir Singh told Newsline.
Brar,who is employed with Punjab Mandi Board in Chandigarh,reported to the police that he was married to Kaur,in her early 30s,in 1995 and they had two sons,aged 11 and 6,from the wedlock. She used to quarrel with me very often and today when I was getting ready for the office around 8 am,she threatened me to commit suicide and will implicate all of my family in the case, further alleged Brar.
On the complaint of Brar,the police arrested Kaur under Sections 309 and 511 of the IPC and produced her before a local court,which sent her to judicial custody till August 30,added the IO.
Man ends life over matrimonial dispute
A newlywed resident of Fatehpur Kheri village in Mohali Mangat Ram,in his mid-20s,reportedly ended his life by consuming some poisonous substance the police said here today. Before his death,Ram,who worked with a sanitation contractor in Kharar,in his statement to the police,said he was married 10 months ago and for the past four months,his in-laws were not allowing his wife to come to his place,following which he was very upset and was repeatedly requesting his in-laws to send his wife but in vain. He alleged that his in-laws forced him to take the drastic step. On his statement,his in-laws have been booked under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) and 511 (offences punishable with imprisonment for life) of the IPC,said the IO Harbhajan Singh,while adding that Ram died at Chandigarh PGIMER. However,no arrested were made as yet,he confirmed.
Orientation day held AT IGCA
The Indo-Global College of Architecture (IGCA) at Abhipur village in Mohali organised orientation day at its campus on Tuesday. It was aimed at creating awareness about architecture,its syllabus/curricula,career options for fresh batch of degree students of architecture. This programme was conceived by Neelam Singla,Chairperson and Manav Singla CEO of Indo Global Education Foundation. Architect Surinder Bahga,Chairman,Indian Institute of Architects,Chandigarh-Punjab Chapter,was the chief guest on the occasion. Architect Swati Behl anchored the programme while architects Renu Saigal,Jeevan Jyoti and Alisha were also present. Principal Harbax Singh welcomed the guests.
In his keynote address,Bahga said most of the countries around the globe were showing and marketing their masterpieces of architecture apart from natural landmarks. For example,Australia exhibits its Opera House,USA its Liberty Statue,France its Eiffel Tower and Egypt its Pyramids. India has a rich architectural history dating back to Indus Valley Civilisation to Mughal to colonial to Le Corbusiers architecture to modern era, he said.
Teej celebrated
Teej,a festival celebrated during the monsoon (saawan),was organised at Ajit Nagar by VIL-Verse Institute on Tuesday. More than one hundred women had participated in this function,in which the main attraction was gidda. Competitions of traditional food preparations henna and other competitions were also held. The winners were given gift vouchers.
Indian Railways subsidiary achieves higher target
At a function to mark the 64th Independence Day celebrations at Diesel Loco Modernisation Works,Patiala,a production unit of Indian Railways,Chief Administrative Officer A K Malhotra hoisted the national flag and took salute from contingent of railways production force and Bharat scouts and guides. This was followed by folk dances by the students of Kendriya Vidyalaya and DMW Public School,Patiala. Paying tributes to the martyrs,Malhotra said qualities like patriotism,hard work,unity,mutual co-operation and justice were the need of the hour to preserved our freedom forever. 66 students awarded certificates
The Chandigarh Scheduled Caste,Backward Classes and Minorities Finance and Development Corporation today organised a certificate distribution ceremony at Snehalaya – vocational training centre at Maloya in Chandigarh where trade certificates were awarded to 66 candidates on successful completion of courses run by the corporation at Snehalaya. Director Social Welfare Dr Vandana Disodia was the chief guest on the occasion.
MCM DAV organises lecture on social outreach
MCM DAV organiSed a lecture on NGOs and Development on Tuesday. The lecture delivered by Rajeshwari Chatterjee,dwelt upon the role of NGOs in development of countries like India. Chatterjee threw light on activities of Jagriti,an NGO that covers 133 self-help groups and about 1,330 women in 30 villages of the districts of Kurukshetra,Yamuna Nagar and Sirmour.
Ten-day training camp concludes
On concluding day of a 10-day workshop on Nosocomial Infections: Introduction,Cost effectiveness,Prevention and Control,a valedictory function was organised at the National Institute of Nursing Education,PGIMER,today. The workshop was sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,New Delhi. The aim of the workshop was to refresh and update the knowledge of nursing personnel about hospital acquired infections (HAN),the sources and routes of transmission,cost effectiveness,factors playing role in transmission of these infections,prevention and control of hospital acquired infections with special reference to nursing aspect.
Candlelight march held at PU
National Students Union of India organised a candlelight march in the Panjab University to make an appeal to youngsters to come up and fight against violence focussing on the Kashmir issue. The candle march was accompanied by students in a large number to support the cause. Randeep Singh Khaira,State President said that riot incidents in the valley are increasing day by day and every effort should be made to bring back prosperity and peace in the beautiful valley.
Brochure for lawyers chamber released
More than 600 advocates attended a function held at the Bar room at the District Court Complex in Patiala for releasing of the brochure-cum-application form for the Lawyers Chambers Block. The upcoming block would solve numerous problems of advocates. In the function held at the Bar room,the officiating District and Sessions Judge Vivek Puri and Patiala DC Dipinder Singh released the brochure. President District Bar Association,Patiala Jeetinder Singh Grewal claimed that the new block would be completed in record time and basic amenities would be provided to advocates.
