A two-day conference-cum-management education fair kicked off at DAV College,Sector-10,on Friday. Organised by Bulls Eye,the fair — MBA Kaleidoscope— saw participation of the Aryan Business School (ABS),Wellingkar,LMT Thapar,SVIET,ISBM & ICFAI. Many students turned up at the venue,where experts answered their queries. Principals,academicians,education administrators and professionals in the field of education were also present. Experts provided students with important information regarding approvals/affiliations/recognitions,which students must ensure before taking admission in any course/college. Speakers present in the fair included Sanjay Joshi,IIM Ahmedabad,Safal Batra,IIM Calcutta,Anoop Ohri,IIM Lucknow and Rahul Mahajan,MDI Gurgaon.

Take part in pulse polio: CM to MLAs,MPs
Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has written to all MLAs,MPs,ministers,Chief Parliamentary Secretaries and Zila Parishad chairpersons to actively participate in the pulse polio round that is starting on January 10. He has asked them to personally administer drops to children in their neighbourhood. An official spokesperson said health officials can also pay surprise visits to the booths. Health Minster Laxmi Kanta Chawla appealed to the legislators,MPs and the public to actively participate in the campaign to completely eradicate polio from Punjab. Secretary,Health,Satish Chandra said 70,000 workers would be deputed for the round,for which 17,000 booths have been set up. He added that 38 lakh children would be covered in this round

Nigerian arrested with 8 kg heroin
AMRITSAR: The State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) today arrested a Nigerian,Felix Odemole,with 8 kilograms of heroin. SSP P K Rai said acting on a tip off,a police party was constituted. The accused was nabbed near the Amritsar railway station.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that Odemole has been residing in New Delhi Since 2004.
His student visa had expired in 2006 but he continued to stay. He then developed connections with drug smugglers through his contacts in South Africa,” said the SSP.

Kidnapper escapes from police custody; 2 cops suspended
PATIALA: Praveen Kumar Pandit,prime accused in the abduction of a couple from Zirakpur in May last year who was arrested in Kauli recently,escaped from police custody on Friday. Sources said the accused was being taken by two policemen for a court hearing in the case when he escaped from near the bus stand. The Patiala police have suspended the two policemen — Havildar Balraj Singh and Navtej Singh — and registered a case of negligence of duty against them under Sections 223/224 IPC at the Kotwali police station. A manhunt launched to recover him did not yield any results. Pandit was one of the three accused arrested by the police of Patiala and Mohali,after a day-long operation in Kauli village. He was one of the accused in kidnapping a Meerut couple – Shekhar and Shelja at gunpoint from near Zirakpur,while they were travelling in their car from Hamirpur to Meerut on early morning of May 21 last year.

CPRC members advocate registration of FIRs on all complaints
Ropar: Members of the Community Policing Resource Centre (CPRC) have advocated registration of FIRs on all complaints submitted by citizens to the police as per law to ensure proper action. The issue was discussed during a meeting of the members,which was chaired by Ropar SSP L K Yadav. It was suggested that the process of registration of FIRs be simplified and there must be classification of complaints on priority basis. They also recommended that general complaints be investigated by a community police officer within a stipulated time before initiating further legal action. The members also suggested that registration of FIRs without any tangible reason must be avoided and in case it is registered,no action be initiated under pressure from any quarter. In order to stop filing of false complaints,affidavits be taken from complainants. It was said that Section 107/151 of the CrPC must not be used in property disputes and parties concerned be asked to furnish bonds. While addressing the meeting,SSP Yadav said that efforts would be made to implement the suggestions given by CPRC members in letter and spirit as it would go a long way in improving police functioning. The meeting was attended by CPRC members Sukhjinder Singh,Dr Ajmer Singh,Bhupinder Singh Bajroor,Paramjit Kaur Pasricha,Sangat Singh Laungia,Raghbir Singh,Yogesh Mohan Pankaj,Amla Das,Kamal Dev and Inderjit Singh.

CBM submits memorandum opposing parking of tourist buses in markets
A delegation of the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal (CBM) submitted a memorandum opposing the move of the Chandigarh administration to allow parking of tourist buses in parking spaces of markets of southern sectors of the city. The delegation stated that the already-congested markets of these sectors could not sustain heavy vehicles in the area and it could lead not only to inconvenience to public but also to conflicts between attendants of buses and shopkeepers. A delegation the Beopar Mandal will also meet the Mayor and the Municipal Commissioner soon to bring to their notice the traders’ resentment over the issue. CBM president Charanjiv Singh appealed to the Finance Secretary to make a separate provision in some other specifically-developed parking area in the city for buses. He also suggested that the Sector 17 bus stand could be temporarily used for the purpose.

K K Narang is new Dy DG of BIS north zone
K K Narang has taken over as the Deputy Director General of the regional office (north) of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) at Chandigarh . Narang will monitor the product and management certification activity of the Bureau in Punjab ,Himachal Pradesh,Haryana,Jammu and Kashmir,parts of UP and Chandigarh. A postgraduate in chemistry,Narang has to her credit experience of around 30 years. She has held important assignments in certification (product and management systems),standards formulation and laboratory in various capacities during her tenure with the BIS.

Suvidha centre to open on Saturdays
MOHALI: The single window system— Suvidha Centre — at District Administrative Complex in Phase I here would now remain open on Saturdays as well. Disclosing this,Deputy Commissioner Prabhjot Singh Mand said to keep public convenience in mind,the centre would remain open on Saturdays from 9 am to 1.30 pm and would work as usual on all working days from Monday to Friday. The processing and attestation of applications for various government schemes,issuance of various licenses,documents and permissions is done at a single counter at the centre.
