Four die in separate road accidents
MOHALI:Four persons lost their lives in separate road accidents in Mohali district on Saturday. A body of an unidentified person was found lying on the Ambala-Kalka railway track in Zirakpur. The deceased,in his mid 30s,was wearing a white shirt and black trousers. The body was shifted to the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital for identification. Inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC have been initiated. The second incident took place on the Zirakpur-Patiala highway when a person crossing the road was first hit by a truck and then by a speeding Toyota Qualis. The person died on the spot but both the vehicle drivers fled the spot leaving their vehicles behind. The body of the deceased,who was yet to be identified,kept lying on the highway for around half an hour after which a police party reached the spot and shifted the body to the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital. Rulda Singh (50),resident of Sarsini village near Dera Bassi,lost his life after a motorcycle hit his bicycle on the village link road. Rajinder Singh of Cholta Khurd village near Kharar died when a scooter rammed his two-wheeler. The police have lodged separate cases of causing death by rash and negligent driving against the drivers.
Kharar goes powerless for 8 hours
KHARAR:The township remained without power supply for around eight hours on Saturday. Supply was cut off at 10 am. Residents alleged that PSEB officials did not answer calls. PSEB local officials were also accused of delaying the ongoing work to four-lane the four-km stretch of the Mohali-Kharar National Highway-21 from Desumajra to Kharar. Despite the deposition of the requisite money by the PWD department over a year ago,the work to shift electricity poles and overhead wires is yet to be completed.
Fun Republic scam: Congress leader gets permission to go abroad
CHANDIGARH:The CBI Special Court of Darshan Singh on Saturday allowed the application of Congress leader Kewal Dhillon,wherein he had sought permission to go abroad for business-related work. The application was moved on July 4 this year and the court has allowed him to go for his work till January 31. It may be recalled that the CBI special court had granted bail to Dhillon and four others in a case pertaining to the Rs 5.36-crore Fun Republic scam in August this year.
Four dead,nine injured in road accidents
AMBALA: Four persons died and nine others were injured in different road accidents in the district. In a collision between a truck and tractor,an unidentified woman died while five others were injured near Handesra. The victims had reportedly taken a lift to reach Lalru when the accident took place. In another accident,a scooterist identified as Manjeet Singh from Hoshiarpur district died when a truck hit him near Mohra village. In the third accident,12-year-old Roopak Kumar,son of migrant labourer Bachi Ram,was run over by an unidentified vehicle near Ramgarh village. A person died while four others were injured when a maxi cab hit a car near Manaki village on Jagadhri road. The maxi cab driver managed to flee.
Man robbed of Rs 2.25 lakh
KHARAR:Two unidentified motorcycle-borne youths snatched away a bag containing Rs 2.25 lakh in Kharar on Saturday,the police said. Harminder Singh of Deh Kalan village,along with his associate Ram Singh of nearby Madanheri village (both truckers),was going on a motorcycle to the local truck union office after withdrawing the cash from the local branch of the Punjab and Sind Bank on Landran Road in Kharar. As we reached near the grain market,a motorcycle,coming from the opposite direction,tried to ram into us and to avoid the collision,I stopped my motorcycle,following which the unidentified bikers snatched away the bag containing the cash from Ram Singh,who was riding pillion, Harminder reported to the police. A case under Sections 382 and 34 of the IPC has been lodged.
Freedom fighter Lala Amar Nath passes away
AMBALA: Freedom fighter Lala Amar Nath of Shehzadpur passed away at the age of 91 on Saturday. He was cremated with full honours. Naraingarh SDM O P Sharma laid wreaths on the behalf of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Born in 1918,Lala Amar Nath plunged into the freedom struggle at the age of 24 to join the Quit India movement under Mahatma Gandhi. He was jailed several times and was lodged in Multan,Ferozepur and Lahore jails. He is survived by three sons and two daughters.
