Vaishno Devi trip turns sour for Panjab University students
A trip to Vaishno Devi became sour after a few students of the Chemistry department of the Panjab University as they were left behind in Katra while the remaining lot came back to Chandigarh. The 12 students lodged a formal complaint with the V-C office today.
The trip,arranged by the Students Council,left the university campus on Friday with 375 students. Barinder Dhillon SOPU president said,There were 375 students and only 12 are complaining. They did not move with the group.
We were left behind deliberately and they did not wait for us and moved back to Chandigarh, said an aggrieved student. The episode highlights the security of students who were not accompanied by any faculty member.
PU scholar bags research award
Anterpreet Kaur,a PG research scholar working at the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS),Panjab University,Chandigarh,has bagged the Best Paper Award at the recently concluded prestigious Silver Jubilee National Conference of the Indian Pharmacy Graduates Association (IPGA) held at Moga on 7-8 November 2009. Anterpreet presented research work on Gastro-Retentive Drug Delivery Systems of Trimetazidine. Besides a certificate,the award included Rs 5,000 cash.
Yoga camp for diabetes
Ahead of World Diabetes Day on November 14, Government College of Yoga and Health,Sector 23, is organising a three-day yoga training camp. The camp would kick off on Thursday. In the camp,various yoga techniques will be included for the management of diabetes and related disorders. Morning and evening sessions will be held. Shuchi and Balvinder Acharya will guide participants at the camp.
S D Public School students visit govt school
Under the partnership initiative programme for quality education in government schools,a delegation of S D Public School visited the Government High School,Karsan,on Monday. The principal,teachers and students of both the schools decided to improve in the field of sports and also enhance their classroom teaching with the help of science practicals. Director Public Instructions (Schools) Samwartak Singh also suggested certain activities which can be taken up with the community and parents of the children. The delegation also prepared a common minimum programme for both the schools.
Workshop on relaxation therapy at GC-11
The Department of Psychology,Government College,Sector 11,organised a workshop on relaxation therapy on Monday by clinical psychologist Dr Monica Singh. Head of department,Dr Saroj Sharma Nagpal,gave an introduction to the workshop. Dr Monica explained the scope and career avenues of psychology. She facilitated and demonstrated Jacobsons progressive muscular relaxation exercises. As a behavior modification technique,it is used for alleviating anxiety and related disorders, she said.
SAARC festival grabs eyeballs at MCM DAV
Audience at the MCM DAV College for Women was mesmerised on Monday,the fourth day of the SAARC Folklore Festival. Teams from SAARC nations and artistes from India exhibited their talent and creativity. Vijay Sabharwal,secretary,DAV College Managing Committee,New Delhi,graced the occasion as the chief guest. Nataraja,Charamchitra Committee,from Andhra Pradesh presented a puppet show depicting scenes from the Ramayana. A band from The Afghanistan presented a song while the Purulia Chao group from West Bengal enacted episodes from the Mahabharata. Principal Dr Puneet Bedi encouraged the students and said the event was a platform for them to turn into global citizens,rebuild our faith in international friendships and preserve our folk tradition.
Workshop on waste-paper recycling for teachers,students
A workshop to sensitise teachers and students on waste paper recycling was held at the Nature Discovery Project,Commonwealth Youth Programme Asia Centre,Sector 12,on Monday. The seminar was organised by the Environment Society of India in association with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) project Biodiversity Conservation and Climate Change Practices. Around 40 teachers from selected schools and 50 students of St Johns School participated in the workshop. In his address,Prabhjot Singh Sodhi,national UNDP coordinator,said waste paper is a major problem in schools and there was an urgent need to tackle it. Equipment for recycling of paper would be supplied to schools on a 60:40 cost sharing basis,he said. Singh also launched the Solution Exchange Programme,a UN initiative for development practitioners in India and asked students,teachers and activists to enroll as its members.
Science exhibition held at Stepping Stones
A science exhibition was organised at Stepping Stones Senior Secondary School,Sector 37,on Monday. Students from Classes VI to X participated in the exhibition which saw various projects related to concepts of energy,electricity,plant cell and chemical processes being displayed. The Yellow House of the school was adjudged the best while Red House bagged a prize for participation.
