CHANDIGARH:
The swearing-in ceremony on Saturday at the Haryana Raj Bhawan led to minor traffic chaos as all the four roads leading to the venue were sealed. Visitors to the Sukhna Lake,including schoolchildren,had a tough time as they had to park their vehicles far-off and walk a distance to reach the lake. Heavy police force was deployed and commuters had to take detours with roads blocked in view of the security arrangements.

PANCHKULA:
A two-day national level painting workshop,organised by Sanskar Bharti,started at The Gurukul School,Sector 20,on Saturday. Artists from Haryana and Punjab are participating in the workshop,which is based on the theme ‘Indian Culture and Heritage’. The main objective is to give a platform to upcoming artists to interact and facilitate their creative art to reach the common man and influence the society in a positive manner. A group discussion ‘Creativity,a Boon’ was also held.

Punjabi University staffer pens ghazals
PATIALA
: Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor Jaspal Singh released Shivranjni,a bilingual book of ghazals in Punjabi and Urdu,penned by Jagtar Singh amid a large gathering of noted Punjabi litterateurs,university faculty,students and ministerial staff on Saturday. Jagtar Singh is the Deputy Registrar (Accounts) at Punjabi University.

Ayosa governing body changed
PATIALA:
Following directions from the patron of Aitchisonian Yadavandrian Old Students’ Association (AYOSA) Capt Amarinder Singh,the old governing body has been changed with immediate effect. According to a letter signed by Capt Singh,the new body would be presided by Chandigarh MP Pawan Kumar Bansal while IPS officer Dinkar Gupta has been named the vice-president for a fixed term of two years. The other office bearers of AYOSA are Rupinder Garg (secretary),Reetinder Sidhu (joint secretary) and Gurvir Singh Jaijee (treasurer). Meanwhile,Amarjit Sagar,Jagjiwan Gill,Tejpreet S Sandhu,Amardeep S Natt and Preetinder Sidhu have been nominated as executive members.

Techno fest kicks off at Rayat institute
ROPAR:
A national techno-cultural symposium,Minerva-2009,got under way at the Rayat Institute of Engineering and Information Technology (RIEIT),Railmajra near Ropar,on Saturday. Students of more than 50 colleges from across the country are participating in the fest. The executive secretary-cum-programme director,Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE),New Delhi,Professor Ranjit Singh was the chief guest on the occasion while ISTE vice-president Professor D S Hira,presided over the inaugural function. Rayat-Bahra Group vice-chairman Gurvinder Singh Bahra also spoke on the occasion. Various competitions were organised on the first day.

Modi is new general manager of SBoP
PATIALA:
R D Modi has joined as the new general manager (Planning and Development) of State Bank of Patiala,at its head office. Prior to this posting,Modi was the deputy general manager in State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur. Starting his career with the bank in 1972,he has worked in various capacities including deputy general manager in State Bank of Mysore.

Conference on energy conservation ends
KHARAR
: The two-day national conference on ‘Advanced trends in engineering and technology’,organised by Guru Gobind Singh College of Modern Technology,Kharar,concluded on Saturday on a note to further the cause of energy conservation in order to deal with the impending crisis. The concluding day saw in-depth discussions on topics and sub-topics of non-conventional energy resources,nanotechnology,optical fiber communication,network security and nesting problem. Professor P Thareja from Punjab Engineering College,Chandigarh,apprised the audience of the manufacturing paradigms in 2020. Dr Jaspal Singh from Punjab Agriculture University,Ludhiana,stressed on the potential of wind energy for use on a large scale in the wake of depleting fossil fuels. He also discussed the role of renewable energy resources in accelerating development and for sustainable development. Dr Sanjeev Kumar from Punjab Engineering College gave an account of research directions in electrical discharge machining while Dr Maninder Singh from Thapar University ,Patiala ,elaborated the system of network security. Dr Kanwaljit Singh from Punjabi University,Patiala,delivered the valedictory address.
