CTYC polls held,120 elected
Chandigarh: Elections for delegates of the Chandigarh Territorial Youth Congress was held on Thursday. Of 140 delegates to be elected from 14 wards,120 have been elected. Polling was held in Congress Bhawan,Vishwa Karma Mandir and Agrasen Bhawan. A large number of members turned up for voting. The delegates have been elected in the run-up to the elections of the president of the CTYC,which is scheduled for July 21,for which Central observors will come. Elections will continue for the next two days.
NCC cadets plant 350 saplings
CHANDIGARH: Around 326 NCC cadets from various institutions of Chandigarh planted 350 saplings of various medicinal and fruit plants at Sukhna lake area near Gurusagar gurdwara in Chandigarh on Thursday. Group commander Col D Gupta was the chief guest. Tree plantation drives have been initiated by the Additional Director General,NCC,Directorate Punjab,Haryana,Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh as a part of the NCC activities to promote green and clean environment in the region.
PU students visit police control room
Chandigarh: As part of their study course,14 students of MA-II (Police Administration),Panjab University,visited the Chandigarh Police Control Room on Thursday to see the newly commissioned GPS system. They were given demonstrations of the GPS-based Automatic Call Distribution of Dial 100 along with the Vehicle Tracking System.
EuroKids celebrates Fathers Day
CHANDIGARH: EuroKids organised various activities like dancing,story telling,craft and special cooking competition on Thursday as part of its celebrations of Fathers Day week.
Attending the function with his daughter,Digambar Jaiswal said: Celebrating the occasion with my kid in her school was wonderful. Such activities help strengthen the father-child relationship. Principal Mona Verma said: The occasion brought tremendous fun to the children and their fathers.
PU to have symposium through video-conferencing
CHANDIGARH: A two-day PURSE-sponsored symposium on Image processing analysis and clinical application will be held on July 16 and 17 under the aegis of UIET,Panjab University,in collaboration with the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE),Chandigarh-Chapter. According to Professor Renu Vig,UIET director and patron of the symposium,the objective was to promote research in the field of medical imaging,bio-instrumentation,telemedicine and their applications. According to sources,a remarkable feature of the symposium is video-conferencing set-up,which has been established between UIET,PU Chandigarh,GGPURC Hoshiarpur and V-C office,PU Chandigarh. PU Vice-Chancellor Prof R C Sobti will deliver the inaugural address from his office at 10 am,which will be telecast live at UIET and SGGPURC,Hoshiarpur. The symposium will be attended by the faculty members at SGGPURC,Hoshiarpur through video-conferencing facility.
Youth Akali leader murder case: Two days on,accused still on the run
Chandigarh: Two days after youth Akali leader Tripat Deep Singh Sekhon was shot dead in Sector 9,prime accused Minkle Bajaj is still on the run. The police released his photograph on Thursday even as raids continued for the second consecutive day. The victims call details are being scrutinised,said a police officer,adding that the mobile phone of the accused is switched off. Two police teams have been dispatched to arrest the accused. Teams have been sent to Muktsar and raids are being conducted. The Muktsar police is also searching for the accused and we hope to get a lead soon, said UT SSP S S Srivastava. The police also confirmed that there are more than one accused in the murder.
Man misses flight after reschedule,airlines to pay
Chandigarh: The District Consumer Redressal Forum has directed an airlines and travel agent to pay Rs 14,500 to a complainant for failing to provide intimation on the change in flight schedule. In his complaint,Rajiv Kumar Trikha,a resident of Sector 7,said that he booked an e-ticket in the from Bengaluru-New Delhi Jetlite Flight for October 3,2009. The departure time of the flight was 12.00 noon. On reaching the counter of Jetlite at 10.49 am,Trikha was told that the flight had already taken off at 10.40 am. The complainant had to purchase a ticket of Kingfisher Airlines worth Rs 7,889. The forum directed the airline and travel agent,Kriti Travels,to pay the complainant Rs 14,500 along with Rs 2,200 as costs of litigation.
Narrow escape for 10-year-old
Chandigarh: A ten-year-old boy had a narrow escape when he was nearly drowned in a seasonal stream,while playing in Budhanpur village behind Rajiv Colony in Panchkula on Thursday. The boy,Mohammad Juveer,was playing with his friend when he suddenly fell into the rivulet. The victim survived for almost 50 minutes in the fast flowing water by holding on to some shrubs. The police reached the spot and tried to save him with the help of Surinder,a home guard,but failed. Fire Department was also informed about the incident. Meanwhile,19-year-old Kundan,a resident of Budhanpur,with the permission of police,tied a rope around his ankle and entered water to save Juveer. He,too,however failed. The fire brigade team then used a ladder,which was passed to the boy,who was 30 feet away. Juveer held on to it and was pulled out.
Woman duped of ornaments
Chandigarh: A woman in Sector 38 was duped of her gold ornaments on Thursday. Reetu told police that two persons came to her residence to sell a powder for polishing utensils. They asked her to bring a pressure cooker and put water in it,following she was asked to put her ornaments in it for cleaning. She put her bangle and earrings into the cooker after which the miscreant asked her to bring the lid of the pressure cooker. On returning,she found the men had fled with her ornaments. A case of theft under Section 380 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against two unidentified persons. The SHO said the victim has given a description of the accused,which would help them ascertain if the same youths who duped a woman in Sector 52 on Wednesday were involved in todays case.
Minor held for stabbing
CHANDIGARH: A boy was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly stabbing a 17-year-old resident of Maloya following a street fight. The victim,Anuj,is admitted to the Sector-16 Government Multi-Specialty Hospital,where his condition is said to be stable,said a police officer. Two other accomplices of the accused are still at large. The minor arrested in the case has been sent to a juvenile home and a case has been registered.
Cop gets two years in jail for accepting bribe
CHANDIGARH: Convicted for accepting a bribe of Rs 1,200,a former head constable with the Chandigarh Police was today granted two years imprisonment,besides being asked to pay a fine of Rs 2,500. A special court of CBI Darshan Singh,Additional and Sessions Judge,awarded the sentence to Baldev Singh after it was proved that the constable had been caught accepting bribe by a tandoor owner in Sector 30. On October 30,2007,the CBI had caught Singh accepting the bribe from one Amit Kumar for allowing him to run an open tandoor in Sector 30.
No arrest in car theft case
PANCHKULA: Nearly 24 hours after a Sector-4 resident was allegedly robbed of his Skoda car in Sector 26,the police are yet to make any arrests in the case even as various theories are being looked at. Claiming that glaring gaps in the case raise suspicions of the matter being concocted,a police officer said the statements given by the owner of the car,Preet Ahluwalia and his friend,Gandharva,are inconsistent. While Preet said the boys who robbed him were Sikhs,the latter claimed they were clean-shaven men. Also,the police are investigating the boys claims of gunshots being fired in the air by the accused.
Pak spy case: 3 get 14-day judicial custody
CHANDIGARH: A local court granted a 14-day judicial custody to three passport agents who reportedly got a fake matriculation certificate of Punjab State Education Board made for a Pakistani spy. The accused,Gurpinder Singh,Kulwinder Singh and Jagdish Kumar,had arranged the certificate for Pakistani spy Kasaf Ali,who is now in custody. The certificate details reading Pawan Kumar,a resident of Delhi and currently living in Sector 44-C,Chandigarh was handed over to Ali within 15 days. The court took a handwriting specimen of Kumar and handed it over to the officials who wanted to match the handwriting with those on the fake documents recovered from the suspected spy. The police had arrested the trio on Monday and had recovered a cheque worth Rs 3,500. The case will now come up for hearing on July 28.
Woman kills self in Ambala,parents allege dowry death
Ambala: Saroj (28),wife of Air Force Sergeant Vinod Kumar,was found hanging in her house,in the Air Force Colony,Ambala Cantonment,on Thursday. On receiving the information,police took the body in their custody. Postmortem was conducted in the hospital this evening. Parents of the deceased alleged that Vinod used to harass her for bringing a car,which they could not afford. The police have registered a case.
Punjabi varsity extends date for admissions
PATIALA: In anticipation of the universitys academic councils approval,Punjabi University Vice Chancellor Jaspal Singh has extended the dates of admissions in regular courses of colleges for this session. This will not be implemented in colleges for for law and physical education and courses where admission is based on the schedule of the Punjab government.
In a letter to colleges affiliated to the Punjabi University,the V-C said regular admission process will be open till July 22 and from July 23 till August 2,students can pay Rs 400 extra and submit forms,but with principals permission.
Court summons St Johns principal
Chandigarh: Additional Chief Judicial Magistate Anshul Berry issued summons to St Johns principal Kavita Dass on Thursday. Dass is a respondent in the case,wherein it was alleged that students were being taught hacking and shown porn sites in school. Dass has to appear in person for the hearing on October 8. Global Human Rights Council chairperson Arvind Gupta had filed the complaint,in which he had made SSP UT,SHO police station Sector 26 and Dass as respondents. In the complaint,Thakur said one T K Goyal,whose children study in the school,has documentary evidence that the schools official website was used to watch porn sites. The complaint further mentioned that the school had organised a programme to officially teach hacking websites to students.
Transformer,shop gutted in separate incidents
Ambala: Panic spread in the localities adjoining 12 Cross Road Power House Sub-Division Number 1 in Ambala Cantonment on Thursday,when a transformer caught fire around 11 am. The fire engulfed electricity cables and oil drums used for transformers. Fire tenders were immediately pressed into action and power supply was snapped in the entire town for more than three hours. The Haryana Vidyut Vitran Nigam officials said the fire was caused due to a short circuit and the Nigam suffered a loss of neatly Rs 10 to 15 lakh. Meanwhile,a photo shop,Capital Studio,on the Hill Road was also gutted when it caught fire due to a short circuit today. Costly equipment and cameras were damaged and the loss was estimated to be in lakhs,said shop owner Narinder.
Truck impounded
Ambala: A truck loaded with nine cows and two bulls was intercepted by the Parao Police,with the help of social worker Gopal Baba on Thursday, while it was passing through the Ambala Cantonment on NH 1. The truck was on its way to Muradabad in Uttar Pradesh from Nakodar. It was impounded and the crew,including the driver,was taken into custody after registering a case of cruelty on animals. The animals were sent to a cowshed.
One dead in mishap
Ambala: An auditor of the Haryana Accounts Audit Department,identified as Mohit Kumar (31),died in a road accident on Wednesday night,when his car rammed into some trees near Kalpi bus stand on Ambala-Dehradun National Highway. Mohit was returning to Chandigarh after auditing the accounts of the office of Barara Development Block. According to eye witnesses,he lost control on his vehicle and it rammed into the trees and caught fire. Mohit was badly injured and was rushed to the MM Hospital,where he succumbed to his injuries.
Truck driver has miraculous escape
Ambala: Driver of a truck,which overturned while saving a buffalo in front of the local SD College on Ambala-Dehradun NH on Wednesday night,had a miraculous escape. The driver,Mukesh,was stuck under the truck for nearly two hours,before some boys came to his rescue. They cut a portion of the truck and pulled him out. He was rushed to the civil hospital,from where he was referred to the PGI,Chandigarh.
Teachers orientation course concludes
PATIALA: The fourth orientation course,which began on June 18,concluded on Thursday. The course,organised by the Academic Staff College,Punjabi University,Patiala,had 39 participants from different faculty,institutes and universities. It aimed at sensitising the participants about professions like teaching and improve professional skills to achieve higher objectives in life. Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University Jaspal Singh congratulated the participants for completing the course and gave away certificates.
UP youth booked for selling beef
MOHALI: A youth from Uttar Pradesh has been booked on charges of selling beef in the city. Akram Ali was booked after a Phase I resident Vaneet Gupta reported to the police that he saw the accused unloading three containers of beef from an autorickshaw. The accused,however,managed to flee leaving behind the beef consignment. A case under Section 8(1) of the Punjab Prohibition of Cow Slaughter Act,1995,was registered against the accused and a hunt has been launched to nab him,said a police officer.
Packers and movers to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation
AMBALA: The Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum,Ambala,while accepting the complaint from one Ashok Jain,a resident Ambala,directed the other party,Balaji Packers and Movers Mumbai,to refund Rs 7,500 charged for insuring the goods and lifting two cartons,which had been delivered wrongly to the complainant. The Forum further directed to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation for the lost and damaged goods,in addition to payment of Rs 2,000 as litigation expenses. The forum,in its order,said if the payment was not done within a stipulated period,then the complainant will be entitled to interest at the rate of seven per cent per annum from the date of complaint till actual realisation. The complainant,Jain,had booked his household cargo to be taken from Mumbai to Ambala through Balalji Packers and Movers in December 2009,but didnt receive it.
