You know whats the best part of being a generation-caught-in-the-middle: you get to live the entire transition – from playing the dying era tape-recorders,walkmans and video cassettes, enjoying the clarity of the compact disc and the intelligence of super computers to now walking hands-free with a pocket-size mobile population, technology has wrapped our lives in the palm of our own hands. And as citizens of this short and sweet pygmified world where everything is touch button and a click away, were going to be treated to yet another tech-cookie – actually, its always been there, just that its acquired some new content – hardcore commercial Hindi film music. And the latest to flash it is T-Series and Reliances Big whore releasing their films music on pendrives and SD Cards. Getting on with the digi-drive is Blue,Main Aurr Mrs Khanna,Vipul Shahs London Dreams,Radio,Bigs Do Knot Disturb,et al. And its not just music – the pen drive has wallpapers, different versions of the music and many other applications.
While the industry is playing with their new tech toy,Gaurav Trehan of Catrack feels that this is a solid way to check piracy. When people start getting the real thing, theyll value it more and legality of original software will help the business to grow, if all goes well,Trehan might use it for Punjabi films too.
Airing his concern is film Jails music composer Shameer Tandon who feels Hindi film music in a pen drive is still at a very nascent stage. Hungama had tried with chips earlier but it didnt work for the cost of manufacturing of the pen is so high that it will not bring down the cost of carriage, and add to it the cost of copyright. At 500 – 600 bucks, therell be very few takers, and thats why Saregama,Venus and Tips are not even remotely looking at this business, he remarks adding how there is no difference in music quality,no benefit and distributors are not taking great interest too.
But alls not that dull. After getting a decent response on Do Knot Disturb,Preeti Puri,VP Public Relations Reliance Big says no ones interested in buying a CD anymore. Nobody sells tape-recorders anymore,CD players will phase out too. People are used to compact lives and mobiles for it makes so much more sense now. Plus, there is market demand now and this will control piracy to an extent. Its expensive, but everything takes time to settle down, just like DVD players! Thats yet to be seen. In the meantime, flash it!
