Hyperactive, impatient kids may be victims of ADHD: PGI doc

Is your child very impatient, easily distracted and over-active? If yes, then you need to be more cautious and alert about your child’s behaviour,as a significant number of children are suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),is a neurodevelopmental disorder and its main symptoms are those indicating an extremely over-active,inattentive and impulsive personality. If left untreated at childhood, the disorder continues through adolescence and can result in an impulsive, aggressive and chaotic adult.

Children suffering from this disorder are easily distracted, miss details, frequently switch activities, fidget in their seats, talk non-stop,touch and play with everything, are constantly in motion, and have lower academic performance. Furthermore, they are very impatient, find it difficult to do quiet tasks, cannot listen to someone and often interrupt conversations.

Dr Savita Malhotra,Head of Department,Psychiatry Department,PGIMER said,“Though it is quite normal for children to be impulsive, active and inattentive, there are some limits. The children with this disorder are extremely problematic and their symptoms are severe.”

Explaining about how to detect if a child is hyperactive or not,the doctor said,“To check if a child is suffering from the disorder, give him/her a specific task, which requires a particular amount of focus/ attention at that point of time. If a child fails to give the amount of attention required for the task, then there are chances that he/ she is suffering from the disorder.”

Teachers are playing a major role in detecting the disorder among children. “Where parents ignore the problematic behaviour of their child, teachers detect the problem and make parents aware about their children,” she said.

Malhotra said,“As the child grows,over-activity tends to become less, but inattentive and impulsive behaviour might continue.”

The disorder should be treated in childhood itself,as it results in a disturbed adolescent. “The adults are very aggressive, impulsive, chaotic, disorganised and they cannot remain in one relationship or job for long. They are more into drugs and reckless driving leading to more accidents, risk taking is high and there is always a need of a high among them, they do not think of consequences before they act.”

Talking about the treatment, she said,“Fortunately, very effective treatment of ADHD is available, which is a combination of medication and psychological therapy. The treatment starts showing its impact within three months, and it continues until the child is up to 16-18 years old.”

Along with children, counseling of parents is a must, she said. “They have to understand their child’s problem,” she added.
