‘How can I face the family?’ says Atul Kumar

Anupama,a student of Government Girls Senior Secondary School,Sector 18,slipped while trying to board a CTU bus after school and the tyre of ran over her leg.

“I do not have the strength to face the family. I would not know what to say,” said Atul Kumar,the driver of the CTU bus that ran over Anupama’s leg. Kumar,who had met Anupama’s family at PGI when she was battling for life,said that he did not attend her cremation as he would not be able to face the family. He blamed the lack of timely treatment by PGI for the death. He further said that the design of the low floor buses creates a problem in maneuvering them.

Anupama,a student of Government Girls Senior Secondary School,Sector 18,slipped while trying to board a CTU bus after school and the tyre of ran over her leg. While she was admitted at PGI,she developed sepsis which claimed her life.

After the accident,the department chargesheeted and initiated disciplinary action against Kumar. After her death,Kumar was suspended and a charge of death due to negligence (Section 304 A) added to the earlier charges of rash and negligent driving (Section 279).

Speaking to Newsline,Kumar said that maybe if Anupama was shifted to some other hospital for treatment,her life could have been saved. “We tried to help the family in whatever way we could. Even I have a daughter; so understand ordeal the Sarkar family is going through. It was an accident. No one would do such a thing intentionally,” said Kumar.

Kumar has been a driver with CTU for six years. He has two sons and a daughter aged between 10 and 12 years. A native of UP,he resides at Manimajra. Kumar said,the design of the low-floor buses is such that these are difficult to drive. The tyre is behind the door and problems arise when there is a huge rush of passengers. The design of the old buses was better,he pointed out.
