Himachal Confedential

CM Prem Kumar Dhumal and Congress’ state unit chief Kaul Singh Thakur have been taking potshots at each other, and the war of words has now moved on to past associations and affiliations.

Past imperfect

In the game of one-upmanship neither the Congress nor the BJP are far behind. Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal and Congress’ state unit chief Kaul Singh Thakur have been taking potshots at each other, and the war of words has now moved on to past associations and affiliations. Digging into the past of chief minister-aspirant Thakur,Dhumal has been repeatedly reminding him of his association with the erstwhile Janata Party,of which the chief minister, too, was a member. An embarrassed Congress leader was left with no choice but to give a quick repartee. “Even you (Dhumal) have been a comrade as an employee of an insurance company before joining politics.” Perhaps,Left is the new Right.

Cops in babus garb

What is in a uniform. That seems to be the thinking in Himachal Pradesh, which after posting half a dozen Forest Service officers as special secretaries and a secretary and also to man the public sector units,is now planning to post police officers in civilian roles. The latest in the role play has Additional Superintendent of Police Shubhra Tiwari tipped to take charge as joint secretary, social justice and empowerment. After all,it is just a change of clothes.

Like father,like son

Starting at an early age is always advantageous and when it comes to politics, the earlier the better. BJP rebel MP Rajan Sushant, who is already leading a movement against corruption in Himachal Pradesh against his own government, may have imbibed these qualities to his son Dhereya Sushant,a final year law student. Sushant was among the first few MPs to visit Anna Hazare at Ramlila ground, and while the father was doing his rounds in Delhi, the son sat on a six-day hunger strike with 67-year-old Lakshmi Chand, who broke his 12-day fast on Sunday at Shimla’s historic Ridge. After all,the Sushants don’t want to miss out on the first mover advantage.

Ready for a ride

When it comes to comfort, there is hardly anyone to beat the politicians. But AICC general secretary Birender Singh,a Haryana leader, had other plans during the padyatra, and pushed his fellow Congressmen out of their comfort zones. As Congressmen tried to give excuses to hop on to vehicles,Birender Singh posted observors from Haryana along the 45-km route from Solan to Shimla to ensure that the padyatra doesn’t turn into a vehicle ride. But then,he does have plans of taking the Congress leaders on a ride. With a luxury bus fabricated at a cost of Rs 70 lakh with high glass windows,he plans to take all top Congress leaders across the state. And after the Congress comes to power,he plans to use the same bus to parade BJP’s corrupt ministers and MLAs before the people. Well, one can’t accuse Birender of favouring his partymen alone,as he is offering a free ride to his opponents too.
