Its restoration time for the historical and heritage buildings in Shimla. After historic Gaiety Theatre (restored in 2009) and the US Club building,which was thrown open to the public as Shimla Heritage Museum on Saturday,it is now the turn of the Town Hall to undergo a facelift.
The municipal corporation office functioning from the Town Hall will be moved to another location to let the state start the restoration work.
Town Hall,which is one of the first buildings to have been constructed by the Britishers in Shimla, is in urgent need of renovation. It houses the offices of Shimlas mayor,deputy mayor and commissioner also.
Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal,who dedicated the Shimla Heritage Museum to the public on Saturday said: Bantony building,which will be acquired by the government soon,could be a possible temporary seat of the municipal corporation. We have allowed the civic body to start the process to take over the building.
Dhumal said that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has sanctioned Rs 428 crore in funds for the states tourism department to undertake new projects. Nearly Rs 19 crore will be spent on Shimla town for restoration of heritage buildings and creating other infrastructure. Restoration of the Town Hall is also part of the project.
