Amid reports of a mild lathicharge and more than 50 persons being detained by police before being let off in the evening, tension returned to Gobindpura in Mansa on Saturday over Indiabulls power plant land acquisition row.
The agitators were detained by the police on Saturday after they tried to uproot the barbed wire poles along the 166 acres of land, the owners of which are opposing the acquisition and have been on a collision course with the Punjab government.
A villager Balbir Singh claimed that 25 per cent of barbed wire poles around the controversial land have been already uprooted and affected villagers were heading towards their lands to uproot the remaining poles when they were picked up by the police.
He said that affected villagers wore black badges as they marched to boycott the ensuing SGPC polls and uproot the poles.
More than 600 voters for the SGPC polls are listed in the village and wife of a former SAD legislator is contesting from the area. The affected farmers have even decided not to allow setting up any poll booth for SGPC polls, Balbir said.
Mansa Senior Superintendent of Police,Surinder Singh Parmar, denied any lathicharge on farmers. Asked about the detained persons who were let off later,Parmar said: They were miscreants who wanted to create trouble.
