Go slow: Maximum permissible speed on city roads reduced by five km/hr

With a view to curb the increasing number of road accidents in the city,the Chandigarh Police on Saturday decided to lower the maximum permissible speed limits on city roads,including Madhya Marg,Uttar Marg,Vikas Marg and Dakshin Marg.

Also,the maximum permissible limit has been lowered on sector-dividing roads,inner roads and market roads. The order will be implemented from Sunday.

For light motor vehicles,the maximum speed limit on Madhya Marg,Dakshin Marg,Vikas and Uttar Marg (all three lane roads,V1 and V2) is 60 km/hr. Earlier,the limit was 65 km/hr. Whereas on sector-dividing roads and market roads (two lane roads,V3 and V4),the maximum limit is 50 km/hr. On inner roads (one lane V5 roads),the limit is 40 km/hr. And on the lanes inside the sector roads (V6),the speed limit will now be 35 km/hr.

For two wheelers,the limit (on all three lane roads,V1 and V2) will now be 45 km/hr. Earlier,it was 50 km/hr. On V3 and V4 roads,the limit for two wheelers will be 45 km/hr,while on V5 and V6 the limits will be 40 km/hr and 35 km/hr,respectively.

For medium or heavy passenger motor vehicles and heavy goods vehicles,the maximum limit on Madhya Marg,Dakshin Marg (all three lane roads,V1 and V2) will be 50 km/hr. On sector-dividing and market roads (two lane roads,V3 and V4),the maximum limit will be 40 km/hr. On V3 and V4 (roads with two lanes),the limit will now be 35 km/hr,while on V6 roads,it will be 30 km/hr.

The Chandigarh Police has also decided that permissible speed (in km/hr) for all categories of motor vehicles will be 30 km/hr,within a range of 80m of any roundabout.

According to the figures issued by the Chandigarh Traffic Police,a total of 76,260 challans have been issued and 5,686 vehicles impounded so far,this year. Out of these,8,590 people were challaned for over speeding and 2,049 people for drunken driving.

In 2012,a total of 421 accidents took place in Chandigarh,in which 134 commuters lost their lives and 353 people were injured.

Till May 30 this year,a total of 182 accidents took place in Chandigarh,in which 45 persons were killed and 145 persons were injured.

Police said that the matter was discussed with a few IIT professors,who also supported the Chandigah Traffic Police initiative to reduce the speed limits in the city.
