Mr President: Luck counts. Especially if it’s put you in a winning position throughout. It worked wonders for Amit Bhatia, and with Rajwinder Singh Aulakh’s nominations cancelled for the post of president at the last minute,Bhatia got the golden chance to stand tall. “This because I won the elections for presidents post in 2006 – 2007 in SD College and have worked for the party in the last one year,” tells this second year student of UIMS. With immaculate academic scores throughout, cricket player at the national level,“the approach to do everything to perfection has also helped me,” he adds. Having completed his schooling from Manav Mangal School and Government Model School,Sector 16,Bhatia now wants to focus on improving infrastructure and academics. “And also prepare work towards zero violence elections next year,” he promises.

Girl Power: If there’s one candidate from the panel who will go down in PU election history,it’s this stylish lady. For Deepika Thakur is the first woman to be elected for the post of General Secretary in PUSC. Earlier, geared to contest as the president from INSO,the SOPU-INSO tie-up saw her change stance. “It’s about empowering the women of the university and the cause is higher than individual and party interests,” tells Thakur. Also, having initiated a women’s front in the campus, this PhD student wants women in university to be able to work independently and be able to represent their own cause. But for starters,“the focus is on getting more hostels for girls,” she reels as she rushes on to the hostels to thank them and to host a party. Next year, the girl from Dharamsala is eyeing the president’s post.

Behind the Scenes: From Jind,Haryana,Virinder Boora probably would have never contested the elections had it not been because of his party. “Owing to violence in elections,my parents, who are farmers, never wanted me to contest, but it’s because of my friends faith in me that now I am the Vice-President of this university,” Boora,a third year student of pharmaceutical sciences, flashes a smile. “Now that I am here,it’s time to give back to the university and for now I want to build an auditorium for the BMS block,” he signs off.

Engineering Success: This fourth year student of UIET’s been on his toes for a while. Hosting debates, putting posters and spreading awareness about the agendas in hand,“I was working without the hope of getting any post. I had filed nomination as a covering candidate for Harshwardhan, but he couldn’t make it due to over-age so I stepped in,” Gaurav Aggarwal, who’s been elected as the Joint Secretary,is modest about his win. A resident of Mathura,“now that I have won I want to work for my department — install a complaint box, enhance the placement cell, increase the amount of scholarship and get a water cooler for the hostel.” Now that’s what we call a department loyalist!
