Dalit leader and former Congress MLA from Punjab’s Bassi Pathana, Gurpreet Singh G P joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday at Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s residence in Chandigarh.
Mann welcomed him into the party fold in the presence of Cabinet minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer.
Sources indicated that the AAP may field Gurpreet Singh from Fatehgarh Sahib in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Earlier, the name of Punjabi artiste Karamjit Anmol, who is also considered close to chief minister Bhagwant Mann, was being discussed for the seat but it appears that a consensus could not be reached on his name.
Gurpreet Singh G P is known to have had issues with Congress leader and former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi. Their enmity had come to the fore when Channi’s brother Dr Manohar Singh had contested against Gurpreet as an Independent from Bassi Pathana in the 2022 Assembly elections. Both lost the election to the AAP’s Rupinder Singh Happy.
