Father dead,mother jailed,their lives derailed

Their world has turned upside down. They waited endlessly for their mother to return on Thursday.

Their world has turned upside down. They waited endlessly for their mother to return on Thursday, unaware of the fact that she has been jailed for killing their father. Their world had collapsed around them when they saw their mother being taken away by the police on Wednesday and their father lying dead at home. Unable to comprehend what happened,Mahesh (11),Rakesh (9) and Anita (7) — the three children of Govind Rana and Maheshwari (30) — waited for their parents to return to their Badheri home.

The police had arrested Maheshwari for the murder of her husband on Wednesday evening.

While Anita has not slept since last night as she is not used to sleeping without her mother,Rakesh said his father had been “hospitalised as he is ill” and his mother was in the police station. As the two sat in their neighbour’s home and waited anxiously for their mother to return, the eldest son,Mukesh, was in tears and was consoling his younger siblings. He is the only one of the three who has some idea that his father is no more.

“Police took away my mother to the Sector-39 police station. She is still there and will return soon. Yesterday,my father was lying still and my mother was crying,” said a teary eyed Mukesh. He further said relations between his parents were strained and that there were frequent fights at home. “My father used to come home early and fight with my mother a lot,” Mukesh added.

“I will sleep only when my mother will come; will eat with her only,” said Anita, even as her eyes were looking out of the window. The three missed their exam today,as they could not go to school with their house locked by the police. All three are studying in Government School in the Sector 41.

The three refused to go their aunt’s place in Sector 40 and felt comfortable in the company of neighbours who brought them to their home yesterday. While their grandparents are too old to look after them, their relatives hail from a far flung village in Uttarakhand. The children will now go to the village with their relatives. ‘I wanted to poison him’

Maheshwari confessed to killing Govind, the police said on Thursday. She said she killed him as she was tired of his wayward ways: he used to drink a lot, which was why they used to fight a lot. She also said she had first thought of poisoning him,but then strangulated him so that she could tell the police that he committed suicide by hanging himself. The postmortem of the deceased was conducted today.
