Farmers heading to site rounded up,let off

Heavy deployment of police force in and around Mansa district prevented most of the members of 17 farm and labour unions from entering Gobindpura village — they were detained before being let off. However,around 60 people,including locals and some members of the unions,managed to reach the controversial site of the proposed Gobindpura power plant but also were rounded up by the police. They were later let off.

The protest was being held to demand that 95 acres of land be returned to the owners,who have not accepted compensation cheques.

Members of the 17 farm and labour unions had assembled in in Barnala district’s Pakho Kalan village to start a march towards Gobindpura in Mansa district. Pakho Kalan is nearly 20 km from Mansa. However,the farmers were not allowed to march towards Gobindpura and scores of them were detained and taken away in three police vehicles from Pakho Kalan.

“Everything was peaceful. We extended all cooperation to the farmers heading towards Pakho Kalan. Later,nearly 200 farmers were detained and let off,” said Barnala SSP Gurpreet Singh Toor. Bathinda district president of the BKU (Ekta Ugrahan),Shingara Singh Mann,said: “The agitation stands suspended for the day. We will announce the next course of action on Sunday.”

In Mansa,while around 60 people were detained from Gobindpura,more than 150 people were rounded up by police at various places. “All those rounded up or detained have been released,” said Mansa SSP Surinderpal Singh Parmar.
