Ex-DSP case: HC issues notice to CBI

The Punjab and Haryana High Court,on Thursday,impleaded and issued notices to the CBI on a petition seeking the arrest of a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP),Gurjit Singh,who is a proclaimed offender.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court,on Thursday,impleaded and issued notices to the CBI on a petition seeking the arrest of a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP),Gurjit Singh,who is a proclaimed offender. He was convicted for life in a case of murder and is a parole jumper. In 2007,Gurjit Singh got parole and never returned to jail. Since then the Punjab Police has not been able to arrest the dismissed DSP.

On a petition filed by Lawyers for Human Rights International (LFHRI),through its General Secretary,Advocate Navkiran Singh,the case came up for resumed hearing. Navkiran said that Gurjit Singh is wanted by the CBI in a criminal case.

Taking note of the contention,the High Court made CBI a party and issued notices to it.

From murder,abduction with the intention to murder,custodial death,criminal conspiracy and escaping from confinement,Gurjit Singh has been charged with several offences in three separate cases. Not only does he stand declared a proclaimed offender but his property too was attached in July by a special Court of the Central Bureau of Investigation,Patiala. Gurjit is also wanted by the CBI in a case of abduction with the intention of murder.

For over four years Punjab Police has not been able to arrest the dismissed police officer who is also allegedly involved in human trafficking. Gurjit stands convicted in two cases out of the three against him.
