Despite a major mistake in checking answersheets of LL.B (fifth semester) students,Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof. R C Sobti does not want to take the erring evaluator to task.

Earlier,76 students of the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) were declared ‘failed’ in the exam. When they applied for re-evaluation,all of them got through. In several cases, students scored 25-35 additional marks.

Subsequently,PU authorities had announced refund of the re-evaluation fee.

Ruling out the possibility of holding even an inquiry against the evaluator,Sobti said a mechanism has been formulated to stop recurrence of such discrepancies in evaluation.

“Certain anomalies were detected in the way the first evaluator checked the answersheets. The evaluator has been identified but I don’t feel there is need for an inquiry or constituting a committee to further probe this case,” Sobti said.

“But we shall strictly implement the recommendations of the B S Brar committee, which was constituted especially to check such anomalies in evaluations. The recommendations include barring the defaulting evaluator (from checking answersheets) in future,” the V-C added.

The university’s move to not punish the evaluator is likely to fuel resentment among students, who want action against the evaluator.

There are indications that Sobti did not initiate any action against the evaluator to avoid resentment among the faculty.

“There has to be a through probe in the entire episode. How can the defaulting evaluator be spared for playing with students’ future?

We will protest against this decision,” Abhinav Sood, one of the affected students, said.

Another student Devesh Kakkar said,“The trauma through which I went can not be expressed. The teachers’ bias resulted in toppers being declared failed.
