On Sunday, the Chandigarh Creative Cinema Circle will play host to eminent documentary filmmakers Nandan Saxena and Kavita Bahl. Their oeuvre spans the domains of ecology, livelihoods, development and human rights. After their postgraduation in English Literature from the University of Delhi, they did a diploma course in journalism. Thereafter, while Bahl worked for The Indian Express for seven years,Saxena opted for the audio-visual medium and is also an avid photographer. It was in 1996 that they turned independent filmmakers. Their films explore man’s relationship with environment through many windows — cultural, political and anthropo-botanical. Their voluntary initiative ‘Via-Media’ is an effort to catalyse change by taking positive stories to receptive minds, and to build the capacity of citizens’ groups and movements. They also hold workshops on filmmaking and photography. Both are visiting faculty at the Department of Culture and Media Studies,Central University of Rajasthan. Catch them and their films on March 31 at Lala Lajpat Rai Bhawan,Sector-15,Chandigarh,at 4 pm.

Cat Calls

Animal Planet is back with its month-long programming special,Where Tigers Rule to celebrate India’s national animal and bring to the fore engaging and varied stories on it from India and around the world. For this, the channel has roped in Ajay Devgn,Bipasha Basu and Olympic gold medalist,Abhinav Bindra. The show will start on April 1. According to Bindra, habitat loss and poaching threatens to destroy tiger population throughout the world.“With only a few thousand tigers left in the wild, many experts worry about the survival of these majestic creatures. If we do nothing, the tiger will be wiped off the face of the earth. It is essential that things must change,” he says. Tiger conservation,he feels,is a collective responsibility. “The tiger is the largest cat in the world. It’s one of the most magnificent species, and I’ve had the chance to spot them on an African Safari. I was mesmerised by their reverent personality and powerful eyes and to know that they can be lost forever is unfathomable,” he says.
