Down to Earth

In every garden, there are some places where we need privacy, especially when the garden is new.

In every garden, there are some places where we need privacy, especially when the garden is new. Low-headed palms like raphis are handy to cover the area near the entrance gate or even a wall or patio. Palms belonging to this class have very attractive fronds (leaves) and can be planted in pots or the soil. They are hardy and can withstand shade and the sun. The leaves look fresh and shining in most cases. Other plants that can be used for camouflaging are those belonging to the ficus species,as they also provide a thick cover.

Now,when the weather has sufficiently warmed up,should I remove the protection covering that was erected on the plants?

Sarabjit Singh,Chandigarh

Yes,you can remove the covering. But if you think that the plants are too sensitive or small and the hot weather can cause injury, then keep the south east side of the thatch covering open.

I had sprayed rogor on the peach plant. Although the new emerging leaves are straight, the old leaves that had curled have still not cured. Will they become straight?

Manoj Gupta,Panchkula

The emergence of healthy and straight leaves is an indication that the rogor has worked and further attack of aphids has been stalled. However, the old leaves that had curled will not become straight.

I have a very good quality karonda plant. A friend wants a similar plant, but it is not available in the nursery from where I had obtained it. How can I help my friend?

Tejinder Singh,Chandigarh You can multiply your karonda through the air-layering (gooti) method. Your gardener would be familiar with the technique or you may ask anyone in the nursery. You can even visit my office for guidance.
